He described it by saying, “It was excruciating.” Smith further explained by saying that performing in Ali was not just physically challenging but it required the same amount of toil emotionally as well.
The actor reflected on his experience in detail by mentioning that he had to learn a different accent for his role. Moreover, the filming took place on different continents which was again a toll. However, not everything was bad here as while filming for Ali, he also had the most humbling experience of his life. Smith shared that, he got a chance to have dinner with Nelson Mandela and Muhammad Ali. He said,
“That was the pinnacle. Nelson Mandela was on my left, and Muhammad Ali was on my right. And so I got fully aware that I meant absolutely nothing in this world.”
Indeed it was a great moment for Smith, as he realized that day while sitting alongside these legends, that all his accolades were nothing before the accomplishments of Mandela and Ali. However, this moment is certainly different from the recent Oscar slap incident, where Will Smith disregarded the lesson of humility.
