James Gunn’s DCU’s next big film, Blue Beetle has got the fan base super excited. The film is a breath of fresh air from all the previous projects from the DC line of comics. The film director Angel Manuel Soto recently shared that the project has taken inspiration from the 1960 Roberto Gavaldón-directed Mexican film Macario. The project is said to pay homage to Latin cinema and magical realism work used in the mentioned Mexican movie that combines reality with fantasy in mundane and trivial situations to deliver big-picture ideas.
This fascinating concept is reportedly adopted by the upcoming film Blue Beetle and makes the film even more fascinating. However, not everything is hunky-dory about the flick. Several negative forecasts concerning its box office numbers have come out, which paint a sobering picture of the film‘s success.
Nevertheless, the film has several interesting elements and is a bold new departure from the usual affair with the DCU. Would Gunn’s next big project resurrect the flailing franchise? Fans of Marvel’s long-time rival surely hope so.
James Gunn’s DCU’s Upcoming Film Blue Beetle is Super Intriguing
James Gunn is one of the most celebrated and creative directors in American Cinema who has successfully helmed several superhero genre films, many of which have grossed millions of dollars at the box office and have received critical acclaim. He is now a co-chairman and CEO of the newly formed DC Studios.
The upcoming highly anticipated American superhero film Blue Beetle is making waves on the internet, with fans gushing about the latest venture in the new DC Universe under Gunn and Peter Safran. The film director Angel Manuel Soto recently revealed that this movie is a homage to the Latin cinema, and the project has taken inspiration from the 1960 Mexican supernatural drama film Macario. In an interview with Movie Maker, Manuel Soto said,
“The magic realism of Macario is stuck with me. I was like, ‘Man, why don’t we pay homage to the movie that built us? Why don’t we pay homage to the movie that we can say is Latin cinema?’ Macario’s magic realism is beautiful, and it’s smart like it is in Latin literature, and it’s ours.”
He continued,
“We aren’t dealing with an alien invasion that’s going to take over the whole world or a monster that’s going to destroy the city. I needed the depiction to be triggering because it’s the experience of many.”
Blue Beetle is yet to hit theaters, and DC Studio boss James Gunn recently announced that the title character, played by Xolo Maridueña, is the first official superhero in the new DC Universe.
Blue Beetle Is Expected to Have the Lowest Box Office Collection

According to Box Office Pro, the much-awaited Xolo Maridueña-led superhero movie will likely gross between $12 million and $17 million on its opening weekend.
Blue Beetle will hit theaters on August 18, 2023.
