Henry Cavill has played a few career-booster roles, making the actor one of the most sought-after actors in recent times. Primarily, his DC tenure as Superman and Netflix’s Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher crowned the actor with Hollywood’s glory with an astounding global fandom.
The actor recently appeared in Matthew Vaughn’s action thriller Argylle. During the promotional tour of the film, the director opened a chapter that for Cavill was a wound yet to heal. There is no secret that the former Superman star desired with his heart to play James Bond, but he lost the role to the charismatic Daniel Craig.
The Discovery of Henry Cavill, Matthew Vaughn Reflects History
Henry Cavill auditioned for the role of James Bond, and the actor had high hopes of playing the iconic character, but he lost the role. Matthew Vaughn, who recently collaborated with Cavill in his stylistic action thriller Argylle, reflected on why the actor lost the 007 role to Daniel Craig as the director had the insight of what actually happened.
“It was really bizarre because, when Henry was auditioning for Bond, I was at Pinewood [Studios], and Daniel was as well, at the same time, and I’d go off and meet with Daniel and he’d say what’s going on. He says there’s this young guy Henry Cavill I think they’re seeing as well. And…we hadn’t done Stardust yet. … But that’s how you came into my radar. I was thinking, well who’s this guy who got down to the last two for Bond? So that’s how I discovered you,” Vaughn said appearing on Sirius XM.
Vaughn who previously collaborated with Cavill in the 2007 fantasy adventure Stardust, explained that Casino Royale director Martin Campbell liked Cavill’s audition for the role of the titular MI6 agent but eventually, it slipped from the grasp of Cavill. But Vaughn found his go-to guy for Stardust.
Matthew Vaughn Sprinkled Salt On Henry Cavill’s Past Wounds
Too young to play 007? James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli believed that Cavill was far too young to play the charismatic character. Despite Campbell’s liking, Broccoli felt Cavill would be unfitting for the role due to his age and decided to go with Archangel and Road to Perdition star Craig. “And I know that the director preferred your audition,” Vaughn told Cavill, who also appeared on Sirius XM alongside Sam Rockwell. “But Barbara [Broccoli] preferred Layer Cake,” he added.
“And they decided you were too young. And I probably shouldn’t have said that, but [Eon] aren’t that keen on me anyway, so what have I got to lose? But he would be excellent. But it’s unfair for him to discuss about a project that he might be involved with or not and ruin it because of a question.”
While Cavill lost the Bond Role for being too young, still, he may never appear in the role in the potential Bond movie series after Craig’s tenure. Now, Cavill would be odd as he would be too old to play the character if the executives follow the same notion as they did during the audition of the first Bond movie.
Argylle is currently showing in theaters.
