Taz Skylar’s Preparation for Sanji’s Role in One Piece Live-Action

In an interview with Esquire Middle East at the 12th edition of the Middle East Film and Comic Con(MEFCC) in Abu Dabi, Taz Skylar talked about how he prepared for the stunts in the first season and how he was starting from zero as he has never played a role of such an extreme fighter.

Skylar stated:

“Ooh… yeah I did all my own stunts! Part of how I prepared for it… I really went psychopathic on it. Like, let’s throw absolutely everything we possibly can at the wall because we don’t have much to stick right now, we’re starting from zero.”

Skylar stated that his action sequences were extremely difficult as they were starting from scratch and because of that he had to go psychopathic in the training so that he could be able to perform his fight scenes and his stunts with perfection. But these stunts could have cost him much more because of his injury.

During the interview, Skylar also talked about how he would train for 4 hours in the morning then try to cook the dish that he had to prepare for the show and then he would go to the sauna to stretch. This proves that the actor did all he could to perform his battle scenes and action sequences on his own.

Skylar stated:

“It was 4 hours of training in the morning, then I’d cook a dish we needed to do for the show, repeat that dish over and over again, another 4 hours, then we’d go to the sauna and stretch, they’d pull on my legs and push on my back. That made me improve really quick but what it also did was decimate my legs. I have scar tissue on the inside of my ligaments and it took me about a year to feel like I could land on my legs without pain – I used to duct-tape my legs! I had to be quiet about it so they’d let me do my own stunts.”

While talking about his training for the action sequences, Skylar also explained how he had to hide his scar tissues from the One Piece crew because he wanted to do his stunts. He used to duct tape his legs and hide the scar tissues, and it took him almost a year to properly heal them as the training and practice would decimate his legs.
