Gigli is a movie co-starred by Beniffer aka Ben Affleck and Jeniffer Lopez, who was one of the hottest celebrity couples of their time. While the film may have done wonders for the couple or even the public’s interest in their real-life romance, it wasn’t well received.
Recently, 20 years later its director Martin Brest looks back on his mob-themed romantic comedy offering brutally blunt thoughts about the film.
Gigli’s Bad Performance is Still Trending
Gigli is about a mobster from LA who is ordered to kidnap the brother of a powerful federal prosecutor. His boss sends in a gorgeous female gangster to ensure everything goes according to plan. Then what? The two begin to fall for each other. The movie was so disorganized, that its director Martin Brest told Variety that he would prefer to block this film from his mind. He said:
Of all the movies that I’ve worked on, I know them inside and out. I don’t even know what that movie looks like, frankly, because of the manner in which it took shape. Even the name… I refer to it as ‘the G movie.’ Probably the less said about it the better.
Brest said that his conflicts with the studio (although he didn’t mention the name of the studio) were so “extensive” that “post-production was shut down for eight months while we battled it out.” The direct added:
“In the end I was left with two choices: quit or be complicit in the mangling of the movie. To my eternal regret I didn’t quit, so I bear responsibility for a ghastly cadaver of a movie.”
Gigli’s failure might have gone unnoticed if it wasn’t featured an A-list pair (Beniffer) in a high-profile relationship. The film was so bad that its director and writer, Martin Brest, retired from Hollywood after the experience. Of being hesitant to talk about his film, the creator of the movie said:
“Given the nature of the flameout that terminated my career, I just felt like it was better for my mood to just put all this behind me and let the movies speak for themselves.”

The 2003 movie “Gigli” faced overwhelming negativity after its theatrical release. It is now considered one of the worst movies ever made. The movie was a major box office failure, earning only $7.2 million worldwide against a $75.6 million budget. It received eleven Golden Raspberry Award nominations and won seven, including Worst Picture.
