Ryan Phillippe’s most iconic movie, Cruel Intentions almost had its own reboot, one that Sarah Michelle Gellar was glad never happened. The movie remains a cult classic and fan favorite. The movie was one that left an impression on a lot of teenagers and with a smashing star cast like Gellar, Phillippe, and even Reese Witherspoon, there was no doubt it would attract an audience.
There were various scenes in the movie that fans came to enjoy and so did the cast. However, there were moments not so appreciated by other people in the cast and crew. One such case occurred with Phillippe, that too when he was doing an improv with his then-wife and co-star, Whitherspoon.
Ryan Phillippe was Forced to Get Slapped Multiple Times
Cruel Intentions sees an enigmatic breakup between Sebastian and Annette. What made it even more impactful was the fact that Ryan Phillippe was filming it with his then-wife, Reese Witherspoon. The two had decided to do an improv and it resulted in the actor saying some unfortunate things to the actress. As per E! News, it got him in trouble.
“At one point I was improvising off-camera for Reese,” Phillippe added. “I guess I said some pretty mean things, so she came over and slapped me. Roger loved it so much he incorporated it into the scene. So basically I got slapped around for a couple of hours.”
He stated that the improv led to Witherspoon slapping him because of the mean things he said. The director became so fond of the idea that he decided to add it to the film. So it led Phillippe to be slapped by his ex-wife over and over again until the director seemed satisfied. Surprisingly enough, it was not the only time Phillippe found himself getting sick at one point.
Ryan Phillippe got Sick After Fighting with Reese Witherspoon
There had been a lot of emotionally excruciating scenes in the movie and the breakup scene asked more out of Ryan Phillippe than being slapped over and over again. They were to fight so much during filming and the things they said to each other negatively impacted the actor. According to The Morning Call (Via E! News), it had just been four hours of them fighting.
“Reese and I had a fight scene where we had to say horrible things to each other for four straight hours. After it was all over, I went outside and literally threw up.”
The actor got so sick afterward that he was forced to go outside just so he could hurl everything out. It was not only emotionally pressuring but also physically.
