The world of cinema and stardom is often correlated to the personality that an individual either naturally possesses, or makes up for the world to take notice. In this situation, Charlize Theron has made it clear that she’s not one to be cornered into a category with her completely dynamic choices in the roles she takes on in her films.

And although she may have been on the path of taking more of the action genre in the Hollywood industry in recent years, she has made plenty of appearances in other popular genres as well. But she has also revealed that these choices that she has made over the years are something that she believes in, even if it meant it would create an image of her, like what happened with Nicolas Cage after his Oscar win.

With so many hit films that she has done over the years, it’s no surprise that Charlize Theron has created an image where she demands respect from the audience as well as their admiration. And her dynamic nature to be placed in any role has made her a top choice by many. Although in recent years of her career, she has been mostly seen depicting characters with a bada*s attitude and flare to them, she feels that this typecasting of roles and switching to another genre completely was something that she might’ve done before if she would’ve got the chance.

In a past interview, the Atomic Blonde star was talking about her experiences shooting Mad Max: Fury Road while also looking at her life in retrospect and telling what she has learned working in the Hollywood industry. Here, when asked about why most of her films in her career have been in the action genre, the star replied, giving an example of how Nicolas Cage won an Academy Award for his romantic thriller Leaving Las Vegas, but then shifted gears and did many action films with Michael Bay. She said:

“I remember this moment [in the mid-1990s], before I was a real working actor — and it’s so sad that it’s a male example, but of course it is — when Nicolas Cage had just won the Academy Award for Leaving Las Vegas and then he went on to do all these Michael Bay movies and everyone was like, ‘What the fuck is he doing?’ And I was like, ‘I see you and I’d do the same thing.’ And he got way more scrutinized for it then, but I get the idea of wanting to tell an emotional story through physicality, and I am, for sure, not saying Michael Bay is fucking doing that. (Laughs.) But back then, it was probably him and John Frankenheimer [directing action films], right? It took me a long time to figure out that the physical narrative is something that I’ve always been intrigued by.”

While it may be true people might look at these stars a certain way from the movies you have done in your career, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they can stop doing what they love or keep exploring what else they want to do, even when it means taking a little hit on their reputation.
