Barrymore revealed that she stalked Sandler as she was convinced that they were meant to work with each other, The unlikely pair found the perfect project with The Wedding Singer, and the two formed a very close relationship ever since. She said,

“When I did The Wedding Singer, I stalked Adam Sandler because I was convinced we were supposed to work together. We didn’t look like we should. We looked for a project and we found The Wedding Singer and that was what we ended up doing first together. All I can say to him is that I was right. We have made three films now over  the course of 20 years and I love him today just as much as ever.”

“You know, I just always believed in him so much. And not that my opinion matters. But I just felt like, this is the guy. This is the one all us women were so in love with him on SNL and you know, I love Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison, comedians create their own brand, their own flavor and scent. I wanted some place to put my admiration and I thought a film was the most safe and cathartic place to do it.”

Barrymore also had the honor of presenting Sandler with the Best Actor Award at the National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala for Uncut Gems in 2020 (via Today). Both actors had nothing but kind words for each other and Sandler even teared up during his acceptance speech after hearing Barrymore’s touching words.
