Among these elements, one character in particular has sparked intense speculation and excitement: Godwyn the Golden, i.e., the Prince of Death. And fans have reason to believe he might be making an explosive return in the DLC.

Could the Shadow of the Erdtree Trailer Be Hinting at Godwyn’s Return?

Fans desperately hope that Godwyn is a boss in Shadow of the Erdtree.

The Shadow of the Erdtree launch trailer was a breathtaking reveal of the many formidable foes players would have to face in the expansion. One, however, stood out quite clearly, especially in front of its backdrop.

Around a minute into the trailer, you’ll spot a ghastly skeleton donning armor grabbing and lifting the Tarnished into the air. It happens quickly so it’s easy to miss, but as it levitates, there’s a familiar face in the background.

That’s right, it’s one of the three-eyed ‘faces’ associated with Godywn. This little reveal has people thinking that the Prince of Death could return to the game as a boss, but in a monkey’s paw twist, the environment has people suspicious that he may merely be part of the catacombs.

The boss also might simply be related to Godwyn, rather, than it being him. After all, it’s merely his body that stays living; his soul is well and gone.

If not for this DLC, he will hopefully be back for another, if Miyazaki ever plans on it. Syre, plans for an Elden Ring sequel or another DLC are up in the air currently, but never say never! That’s what Bloodborne fans have been saying this whole time, and they seem okay… right?

We Need to See More of the Prince of Death

His lore in the base game feels like it barely scratches the surface.

The Prince of Death is one of the most significant figures in Elden Ring‘s lore, being the first demigod to die and subsequently the catalyst for The Shattering as well as the cause of Deathroot (ultimately giving rise to Those Who Live In Death).

His body is buried in the roots of the Erdtree, and deep below Leyndell, you’ll come across a gigantic, grotesque figure of what looks like a giant half-human half-fish with a clam-like face, donning a royal blue cloth with gold and red patterns, just like The Prince of Death did in life.

The body is also posed similarly to the opening cutscene where Godwyn is murdered by the Black Knife Assassins. For this reason, many assume it to be Godwyn’s original body.

However, others theorize that the ex-demigod is spreading through the roots of the Erdtree. A corpse of the same figure can be found underneath Stormveil Castle, and it could be that the Deathroot sprouting from Godwyn’s body is manifesting in the form of these figures across the land.
