Phil Dunster on how Ted Lasso handles delicate topics

Despite being a comedy show, Ted Lasso and its compassionate portrayal of mental health struggles and other important taboo subjects are truly worth noting. Phil Dunster’s character Jamie Tartt although not at all pleasing at first, with time paints a beautiful picture of the toxic side of masculinity. And further breaks down the hard interior shell protecting the abused insecure person with the help of Lasso played by Jason Sudeikis. Thus, similarly, that is not the only storyline dealing with such delicate topics. The show also deals with racism and homophobia with the characters like Sam Obisanya and Dani Rojas.

He then referenced the unfortunate event that occurred with the 22-year-old Real Madrid player, Vinicius Jr earlier this week and expressed his thoughts to Newsbeat saying,

“And also that clubs have had to release statements decrying the use of homophobic chants in football, it feels so deeply backwards and sad. I think the way to overcome the ignorance is by displaying versions of this thing, be it openly gay men in sports, be it dealing with racism in sport. Showing ways of overcoming this in respectful ways, I think it just takes away the taboo a bit.”

Dusnter then further reiterated, what his character has taught him through this beautiful journey and how it has been one life-changing experience,

“Jamie’s a very different person to me, he’s cool and so that was quite a leap for me,—It’s interesting there are characteristic traits in Jamie that I’ve learned from, he’s a very direct and honest person.”

Thus according to the star Phil Dunster, the show despite being comedic in nature has opened the door for discussions that were once considered uncomfortable or off-limits.

Phil Dunster bids Ted Lasso goodbye

As the show comes to an end, the world laments the void. As the finale is finally here, Phil Dunster revealed what all he will be missing about the fictional world of Ted Lasso. Speaking with Esquire, he revealed,

“It’s also that I just miss being with all of those people, having those scenes with Brett. I miss that very much. It’s a weird thing, in that it’s a friendship that you won’t get back: These two characters getting to meet, it becomes a part of you. And unless we hold private meetings in our room and write fanfiction”

He also spoke about the character he embodied for over two years and is now quite a part of his identity. Dunster said,

“He has an element to him, which I just don’t, and that is a total conviction of who he is. He’s a little terror, but he’s learned to be that guy with some kindness. I’ll miss just knowing this dude intimately and all of his choices. It was a real gift.”

All in all, In a world that often feels divided and disconnected, Ted Lasso is a fresh breath of air. Ted Lasso is not just a show, but a beacon of hope in an ever-evolving world. The show will be available to stream on Apple TV +.
