Alas, he shocked Steinfeld when he failed to guess the answer to one of the most crucial details in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The question pertained to arguably one of the most iconic scenes in MCU’s constantly evolving narrative.

In the BuzzFeed Celeb video, Hailee Steinfeld and Jeremy Renner attempted BuzzFeed’s MCU Trivia Quiz. As experts who have dabbled in embodying the franchise’s memorable characters, fans would naturally expect their knowledge of the superhero film series to be exceptional.
The obvious exaggeration aside, what most users found hilarious about the video is that one of the questions Renner got wrong was a question where he was the answer! Even Hailee Steinfeld was shocked.
The question pertained to a scene from the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron. And the moment is one that we are all too familiar with—especially since Avengers: Endgame (2019) later refuted one aspect of it.
Of course, we’re referring to the scene in which some of our favorite superheroes attempted to lift Thor’s hammer but fell short, save for maybe Steve Rogers, who managed to move it slightly in a blink-and-you-‘ll-miss-it moment and nearly terrified the God of Thunder. The former, too, couldn’t successfully do it, but it gave us a scene to remember for life.

The two actors had to answer the following question: “In Age of Ultron, at Tony Stark’s party, who is the first Avenger to try and lift Thor’s hammer?” Giving Jeremy Renner a cheeky hint, Steinfeld emphasized, “Is it Clint Barton?” To this, the Arrival star exclaimed, “Well, that’s the only one?”
Hailee Steinfeld denied it, and Jeremy Renner queried if there were other choices. The former stated: “Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner, and Tony Stark.” Then came the actor’s final answer, which shocked the True Grit star.
Jeremy Renner Stunned Hailee Steinfeld By Answering Incorrectly
Being a part of a franchise entails traversing through hundreds of scenes. Naturally, not every detail can be remembered thoroughly. This may have been Jeremy Renner’s predicament as he responded to the query, which ironically corresponded to his on-screen character!
Alas, the actor failed to recollect correctly. This stunned his co-star, who had expected Renner to get it. Following was the Mayor of Kingstown star’s answer:
“I think it’s Tony Stark!”
An astonished Steinfeld stared at Renner in complete disbelief. The 52-year-old asked, “Am I right?” It was then that he realized his mistake. It was not Tony Stark who first attempted to lift Mjolnir. It was Renner’s character, Clint Barton! Clint, who deemed it a trick, was urged into picking up the hammer by a self-assured Thor. After his attempts were in vain, the rest of the heroes followed suit.
Only Steve could somewhat move it; nonetheless, even his attempts weren’t fruitful.
Despite the scene’s iconic status, Renner failed to recall this crucial Age of Ultron detail. Can the star be blamed, though? The MCU is filled with unforgettable moments, making it essential and intrinsic to contemporary popular culture. If an actor were to remember all the specifics about the franchise, then they would have to carry an encyclopedia around!
Or they could just become die-hard fans, like Iman Vellani.
Nevertheless, the video was well-appreciated by MCU fans, and many lauded Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld, whose on-screen chemistry didn’t fail to translate off-screen.
