Oppenheimer won big at the 96th Academy Awards and when Brendan Fraser announced Cillian Murphy as the winner last night, there was probably no one happier than the actor. However, coming in a close second has to be the St. Anthony’s Boys School, Murphy’s primary school. Located in a village in western County Roscommon, Ireland, the school laid the foundation of Cillian Murphy’s education and had a bit of a hand in making him the person he is today.

Needless to say, they were over the moon when they found out Murphy took the prestigious golden trophy home. Speaking to RTE News, the Principal Seán Lyons stated,

“The excitement when the boys came in through the door this morning. There was boys and juniors and seniors coming up to me and they were saying, ‘Mr. Lyons did you hear the news?’ And I said, ‘What news?’ And they were saying, ‘Cillian won an Oscar.”

The premises of the primary school were decorated with colorful balloons which had Murphy’s name printed on them. Even the young students were ecstatic about the fact that their alum had just won an Oscar. There were cheers all around as proud students praised Murphy. One said, “He definitely deserved it. He’s a really good actor and, yeah, I’m delighted he won the Oscar,” while another student said, “Cillian fully deserved it and he deserves praise from everyone in this country.”

Murphy’s fans were in awe of the gesture.

Well, this is simply enough to bring tears to a grown man’s eyes! Murphy is extremely lucky to have such strong support from his primary school. On the other hand, the actor makes the perfect role model for the students of St. Anthony’s Boys School as he proves time and again that a little boy from a small village can one day have the entire world in his palm.

Now, let’s take a look at what the people from Murphy’s secondary school, Presentation Brothers College, had to say about the actor. Principal David Barry told Cork’s 96FM (via Irish Examiner) that the school was proud of Murphy’s success.

“He is a very talented actor and he has worked so very hard on his craft. We are all so delighted for him and for his family on his success. The school is so, so proud of him.”

The principal continued that they would extend an invitation for Murphy to come back to his roots and speak with the current students of the school.

“The staff have moved on since then. But definitely (an invite to visit PBC will be issued). Whether he will find a gap in his busy schedule to come to the school – but we certainly will be extending an invitation to Cillian to come and visit the pupils here. We would be delighted if he could make the time.”

Whether Murphy is able to take some time out from his busy schedule to pay his schools a visit is a question only the actor has the answer to. However, we would love to see him interact with his principals and the students who look up to him.
