Geraldine Viswanathan recently talked to The Independent and mentioned that she is a huge fan of the rom-com gene. While mentioning Anyone But You‘s success, the actress pointed out that she is happy for the resurgence of the genre. However, she wants more inclusivity in the genre and more people of color to be in rom-coms. She said,
“I definitely have an appetite for rom-coms, and, you know, an appetite for watching people who don’t necessarily look like Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell falling in love. “I want to revamp that and just see more diversity in these stories. I think in many ways it does feel like a page is turned. But it still doesn’t feel equal. It still feels like a specific experience to be a woman of color in this business.”
The industry has slowly made changes and become more inclusive in its storytelling in the past few years. Viswanathan’s claims are valid and people will certainly feel the same way in wanting to see great rom-coms told with people of color. Anyone’s But You‘s success has definitely opened the door for that to happen in the future.
Sydney Sweeney Helped in Tweaking the Story for Immaculate
Sydney Sweeney is gearing up for the release of her new horror film Immaculate. The film sees her playing a nun who finds disturbing secrets about her convent in the Italian countryside. Sweeney recently talked to The LA Times and revealed how she was instrumental in making significant changes in the script to fit the modern climate.
Sweeney stated that the original script was much different from the film that is now releasing in theatres. She claimed that the essence of the original script stayed the same while also stating that the raw and audacious nature of the script instantly drew her in. She said,
“Originally the script was vastly different. Once I got my hands on it and we hired Michael, we drastically revised it so that it could fit who I am today and the world today. But the throughline of the story always has stayed the same. And I think one of the reasons I loved it so much was that some of the scariest and most raw, guttural moments in this movie are in real life.”
The film recently premiered at SXSW with Sweeney and the filmmakers representing the film at the event. Immaculate also stars Álvaro Morte, Benedetta Porcaroli, Dora Romano, Giorgio Colangeli, and Simona Tabasco. It will hit theatres on March 22, 2024.
