Ryan Gosling revealed his father’s domestic abuse

Gosling grew up with his parents, Thomas and Donna, and sister Mandi in Canada. They were like any other family till he was 13 years old. However, things took an ugly turn when his parents could not make their marriage work.

The actor shared that filing the divorce documents was a tough situation for his household, as his father accused his mother of infidelity. This did not go down well and things took a violent turn one day in front of the kid. His father was asked by the court to move out of the family house after he tried to assault his wife. He added that his life became a nightmare when Thomas made efforts to make Donna and the kids’ life miserable.

Later his relationship with his father became more strained when he had to pay funds to his father for starting his acting career.

Ryan Gosling on his religious upbringing

Ryan Gosling was bought up in a religious surrounding in the Mormon house. He was expected to follow the rules and teachings of the Bible. He explained,

“We were brought up pretty religious. My mother admits it. She says, ‘You were raised by a religious zealot.’ She’s different now, but at the time, it was a part of everything – what they ate, how they thought.”

Films that were not related to nature or the Bible were not allowed for Gosling. But it was when he was watching a TV show that he realized that he wanted to pursue to get into the entertainment industry.

He said,

“I was a lonely child. I didn’t do well at school and TV was my only friend. Then, one day, I saw Raquel Welch on The Muppet Show… She was the first crush I ever had, and I thought, ‘How do I get to meet this woman?’ And then I thought, well, she’s on TV, so to meet her I have to get on TV myself.”

Being raised Mormon helped him get a part that pushed his career in the right direction. He played a neo-Nazi in The Believer  

The director Henry Bean said,

“I found that Jewish kids didn’t know much more than anybody else. Ryan understood something about religion. Mormonism is very demanding, and it isolates you the way Judaism isolates you. And he got all that.”

Gosling’s new film Barbie is presently in theatres.
