George Lucas has been involved in some of the most successful movie franchises of all time. The mind behind the Star Wars franchise, Lucas has truly revolutionized cinema as we know it with his magnum opus. Fans of the original trilogy continue to hold the 79-year-old in high regard for making their childhood memorable. But one of the highlights of his early career must have been going to the Playboy mansion to “save the movie industry.” And that too after ditching Carrie Fisher.
George Lucas’s Secret Trip
Years after the original trilogy had elevated George Lucas and everyone associated with the movies to stardom; a new chapter was about to be added to the story, Carrie Fisher interviewed the American Graffiti director on her show Conversations from the Edge.
She had a lot on her plate that she wanted to ask. But what caught everyone’s attention was a question regarding Lucas’s trips to a certain infamous mansion, one which was home to one of the most controversial personalities of the 20th century – Hugh Hefner.
Yes, it was a trip to the Playboy Mansion that was at the center of the conversation.
Carrie Fisher asks George Lucas the hard questions
The When Harry Met Sally… star was determined to ask her former director the hard questions. And she didn’t even flinch from asking why the American filmmaker decided to pay a visit to the Playboy Mansion. It was a conversation to remember (not so much for Lucas though).
Fisher asked the Star Wars: A New Hope director point black if he ever “went to the Playboy Mansion”. Bemused, he said, “I’ve been to the Playboy Mansion a few times.”
The Appointment with Death star wanted to hear more though. Apparently, the Red Tails director was on national television when he was supposed to meet her. But he ended up taking a detour to the Los Angeles property, much to Fisher’s disappointment.
George Lucas has an outrageous reason for visiting the Playboy Mansion
Carrie Fisher confronted George Lucas, saying,
“It was on television (that he went to the Mansion). You were supposed to meet me and you went to the Playboy Mansion instead. I was devastated.”
Lucas clarified that “it wasn’t for the women.” Turns out that was a trip dedicated to cinema as well. He said,
“I was trying to save motion pictures. It was for the film foundation to try to rescue the films that are being destroyed.”
Just how on Earth would Playboy Mansion help with that is a question none of us can fathom except for the Herbie director that is.
