Elisabeth Moss, who played Polly ‘Torch’ Clark in the movie, admitted she also had a hard time approaching the Tomb Raider actress. She felt extremely intimidated by Jolie’s presence and her clique.

There was the Winona Ryder camp and the Angelina Jolie camp. Off camera, but based on what was on camera, based on the script. I was in the Winona Ryder camp. The Angelina Jolie camp was really cool. I was intimidated by the Angelina Jolie camp. I had no thoughts of ever being able to be in that camp.

The actress did not feel confident and cool enough to hang out with Jolie. “I’ve spoken to Angelina since then and she’s lovely, but at the time it was just incredibly intimidating,” she added. Moss just knew she would not be able to keep up with Jolie’s team.

Regardless of her experience, she admitted to having a blast on the set. She was around 15 years old and was accompanied by her mother. “I was with all these movie stars. Winona Ryder! Angelina Jolie! Clea DuVall! Britney Murphy!” the actress added.

Even though she failed to make friends with Jolie, she enjoyed working with her, as well as with Ryder.

Why Winona Ryder Isn’t Friends With Angelina Jolie

Winona Ryder recalled her experience filming with Angelina Jolie in Girl, Interrupted via The Sydney Morning Herald:

I remember thinking, ‘Oh we’re going to turn out to be great friends,’ but I think she needed to be able to look at me just as the character Susanna, not as Winona, so in a very respectful way she just kind of kept her distance.

At the time, Ryder spotted Jolie at an award show, and they haven’t seen each other since. Even though they weren’t able to forge a friendship, the Stranger Things actress admires Jolie’s humanitarian advocacies. She’s also amazed at how the latter handles her problems.

What she’s accomplished after the film in terms of humanitarian stuff, I’m just really happy she did that,” Ryder quipped. Jolie would talk about her problems on the press junket for Girl, Interrupted. The Beetlejuice star felt glad that her costar finally found her calling in life.

Jolie might be intimidating on the set for some of her costars, but the actress has her way of keeping in character, especially due to the nature of the film they were working on. Girl, Interrupted was based on Susanna Kaysen’s 1993 memoir of the same title. Ryder and Jolie both played mentally ill patients.

Girl, Interrupted is streaming on Netflix.
