Blue Lock creator Muneyuki Kaneshiro. in an interview with Gendai, talked about his manga and, in particular, the lack of egoists in the Japanese football team. He explained how the brilliant idea of making ego the center of the anime erupted. Kaneshiro has always desired that Japan win the World Cup. Even as a child, he would be riveted to the television, cheering on the national team.

The idea for Blue Lock was born from his desire to see a powerful striker in the Japanese football team. As he thought further about the story, he realized that the core cause of the Japanese Football team’s difficulty was a shortage of egoists.

The Idea Of Blue Lock

Blue Lock is a Japanese manga series written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura. It has been serialized in Kodansha‘s Weekly Shōnen Magazine since August 2018.

In an interview Kaneshiro said

“The Japanese have a tendency to cooperate and respect harmony, and I think the root of the problems the Japanese soccer world is facing is a lack of egoists because of this excessive cooperativeness,”

Talking to these people made him realize that football is not just about kicking a ball into a net. Players have data, processes, discipline, and team rules in their thoughts, and they enforce them for 90 minutes.

He put all of these thoughts into the story of Blue Lock. However, before he started serializing the manga, Kaneshiro talked to a lot of people involved in the football field. Kaneshiro said,

“I was scared that they would be very angry with me, but many of them said, ‘You are right!’,

He also believed that the audience wouldn’t be able to understand the complex data and stats. This is why he wrote the manga in a way that didn’t go deep into the complex rules, terms, and tactics of football.
