James Gunn Answers Fans’ Burning Questions On Threads

James Gunn replied to a few fan questions on Threads about his casting process and if he considers people’s choices for his films. He wrote:

When I’m casting a role, I will sometimes see who fans have suggested online for folks I or my casting directors haven’t considered. Sometimes they have good ideas, sometimes terrible ones. I don’t remember it actually leading to someone being cast, however.”

When prompted the query on how he decides the schedule of announcements such as castings and movie releases, he responded:

Well, sometimes it just gets out because people find out in agencies or whatever (and sometimes incorrectly!) Other times it’s through our DC publicist Candice, who works closely with me and Peter [Safran].”

Lastly, the Guardians of the Galaxy director addressed an intriguing inquiry about whether any of the cast of Superman: Legacy were secretly chosen during the strike, which definitely would break the rule of the SAG-AFTRA. He clarified:

Of course not. That would never happen with any of the parties involved (not actors, not agents, not studios). Skyler Gisondo and Sara Sampaio and María Gabriela de Faría were all actually cast, contracts done, BEFORE the strike happened. And they were troopers about keeping the secret, which I’m sure was difficult.”

Hopefully, Gunn has demystified all the speculations surrounding the casting for his upcoming film and just general questions about DC Studios’ casting procedure.

Superman: Legacy

After Warner Bros and DC Studios announced that Superman: Legacy will be the first film under the revamped DC Universe to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, James Gunn came to realize this is not just a mere date coincidence. He previously tweeted:

My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, ‘Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.’ I hadn’t realized. I lost my Dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film and I wouldn’t be making this movie now without him. It has been a long road to this point.”

Now that Henry Cavill is out of the franchise, David Corenswet will play the lead role in Superman: Legacy, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan.

Other cast include Edi Gathegi, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, and María Gabriela de Faría. Superman: Legacy will see the titular character embark on a mission to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent.
