Mark Hamill Reveals the Star Wars Scene Carrie Fisher Always Regretted

Mark Hamill played the lead role of Luke Skywalker in the iconic 1977 film Star Wars (later retitled Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope). Carrie Fisher starred opposite Hamill in the film, playing the role of Princess Leia Organa.

The film catapulted the duo to stardom and they later reprised their roles in two sequels to the original and the Disney-produced sequel trilogy. However, Fisher sadly passed away in December 2016, at the age of 60, before finishing work on the sequel trilogy.

A few months later, Hamill appeared at the 40th anniversary of the 1977 film in 2017, where he remembered his former co-star. During the appearance, Hamill recalled the scene where Princess Leia meets Grand Moff Tarkin as the one Fisher really regretted and wanted to reshoot.

I wish I could go back and do that scene again. I really overdid the English accent.

Hamill made the above statement (via Far Out Magazine) recalling what Fisher told him when originally filming the scene. However, Hamill added that he personally felt the scene was almost perfect and there was no need to reshoot it but Fisher clearly felt otherwise and regretted her accent in the scene.

Hamill and Fisher last worked together in 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which was released shortly after the latter’s passing and was dedicated to the actress’ memory. Fisher also appeared in 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker through the use of archive and repurposed footage.

In The Last Jedi, Hamill’s Luke Skywalker meets his end after fighting his nephew and former apprentice Kylo Ren. The film received polarizing reviews from critics and fans, with Hamill himself being vocally critical about the characterization of Luke in the sequels, especially in The Last Jedi.

I regret voicing my doubts & insecurities in public. Creative differences are a common element of any project but usually remain private.

Hamill made the above statement through a tweet in December 2017, expressing regret over publically bashing the creative choices director Rian Johnson made in The Last Jedi. Hamill added that both he and Johnson wanted to make a good movie and hailed the film as one of the greatest in the franchise.
