The animated superhero series Invincible became a breakout success with its debut in 2021. The adult animated series from Amazon Prime Video was based on the comic book series created by Robert Kirkman, who also became the executive producer of the series.

The second season had to wait for a full two years and was released earlier this week. The long wait had fans impatient for more of JK Simmons’ Omni-Man and Steven Yeun’s Invincible. Kirkman mentioned recently that upcoming seasons will come out quicker and that he hopes to continue with it despite complaints from audiences of superhero fatigue.

Plans for adapting Invincible were announced in 2017, with a live-action film being planned by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The duo had contributed to another Image Comics-based TV series Preacher.

While plans for the film are still in development, Robert Kirkman announced that an Invincible TV series would be streaming on Amazon Prime Video and that it would be animated. JK Simmons, Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, Gillian Jacobs, and Mark Hamill joined the voice cast, and the series was released in 2021 to rave reviews.

Despite the abundance of superhero content, Invincible stood out among the clutter and gained a massive fan following. The main character Omni-Man was the subject of many memes on social media. Talking about the show going viral, Robert Kirkman told Inverse magazine,

“Nothing makes me older than the memes. It’s not like we did it on purpose. We’re certainly not sitting around going, ‘This will be a good meme.’ I’m wondering if there will be no memes from Season 2 or just as many. I can’t conceive of what will be turned into memes, which again, just makes me feel super old.”

Despite the huge success of the show’s first season, it took the creative team two whole years to release the second season.

The much-awaited second season of Invincible is finally out after a long two-year wait. However, creator Robert Kirkman and showrunner Simon Racciopa have assured the fans that upcoming seasons of the franchise will not be taking that long. Racciopa said,

“We took more time to make [things] efficient…Infinite time isn’t always the best because you second-guess everything. But a little more time is good, to explore, to experiment, since TV is normally very rushed…I promise it won’t be that long again. No one wants to wait that long. I don’t want to wait that long [either].”

The second season of the show is set to explore the multiverse as well as the main character Mark Grayson a.k.a Invincible’s foray into college. The trend of exploring the multiverse in many franchises has left audiences with a lot of superhero fatigue.

However, the makers seem to assure that they are following the comic books and that they would try to bring out a new perspective to the concept and explore the character through it. Creator Kirkman also seems hopeful about a seven to eight-season run for Invincible. The showrunner said,

“I also think there’s a chance the way the comic ends sets up a lot of other storylines. It’s possible the animated series lasts beyond that point, and there are new stories…it might be easier on the nerves but I feel like you’ve got to keep pushing boundaries and see what the limits are. I won’t stop until people hate the show.”

Kirkman mentioned that he is happy with the way the comic book series Invincible ended and that he hopes to create a similar end with the series.
