Unlike her sister, Sophie Turner’s Sansa Stark wasn’t quite able to hit the mark from the get-go and was deemed among the least-liked characters from Game of Thrones‘ pilot. But as the story kept on moving, Sansa eventually landed her footing, and by the time the show came to a close, she was right up there with her sister Arya as one of the best figures GoT had to offer.
However, not everything Turner eyed for her GoT counterpart came to fruition in terms of Sansa’s romantic life, as she wanted Sansa to have a lesbian relationship in the show.
Sophie Turner Wanted Sansa to Have a Female Love Interest
During her chat with EW on the sets of Game of Thrones, Sophie Turner expressed she would’ve liked to see Sansa’s romantic life take another route. Considering the men thing wasn’t quite working for her, as she was trapped in a loveless marriage with Lannister prior to merging with the abusive Ramsay Bolton, Turner said Sansa should date women. On being asked about her preference, the Dark Phoenix Star named Margaery as one potential option before jokingly dropping Arya’s name too into the mix.
“In the GoT universe, I think she’s going to have to swing the other way — because the men thing isn’t working for her. Judging by Sansa’s relationship with Margaery … probably Margaery… Or Arya — because I’d like to see that happen,” Turner joked. “I’d love a love scene between Arya and Sansa.”
While her fan fiction about Sansa never came to reality, this didn’t stop fans from theorizing that Sansa is indeed a powerful lesbian, and following Turner’s comments, there’s no reason to believe otherwise.
Sansa and Arya Owe Their Life to George R.R. Martin’s Significant Other
Although Sansa and Arya were few of the chosen ones to escape the impending doom of George R.R. Martin‘s pen, this might not have been the case if it wasn’t for Martin’s wife, Parris McBride. Maisie Williams, who played Arya in the show, revealed that McBride threatened to end her bond with Martin if he dared to kill off the two sisters. Williams told Cosmopolitan:
“His wife did actually say that if he ever kills off Arya or Sansa, she’s going to leave him,” Williams recalled. “I’ll just keep smiling, and say ‘if you want to stay with your wife, you’ve got to keep me alive!’”
In the end, neither Martin had to lose his decades-long relationship nor did the two fan favorites have to suffer the same fate as the majority of the other characters.
