Earlier, he said that he would return to reprise the role only if James Gunn asked him to do so. And at such a time, Gunn recently gave some hope to the fans as he shared his interest in working with Gustin. However, it’s not sure for which role Gunn wants him. It might not be Barry Allen.

James Gunn Speaks on the Possibility of Working with Grant Gustin

The Guardians of the Galaxy director said that he wants to work with Gustin. He wrote:

Grant is an incredibly talented guy, performing now on Broadway, I believe, and is absolutely not going to waste just because he’s not currently in a DC project. But, of course, I’d love to work with him at some point.”

Gustin first portrayed The Flash a.k.a. Barry Allen in the second season of Arrow. He then kept playing the role in the standalone series The Flash, which debuted back in 2014. The Flash, being the longest-running series in the Arrowverse, aired on The CW for nine seasons from 2014 to 2023.

Though fans would love him to be back as Barry Allen, he could play some other roles as well, considering his age and look. For Gustin’s part, he is set to star as Barry Keenan in the upcoming biopic titled Operation Blue Eyes. The actor will be seen as the businessman who is the man behind Frank Sinatra Jr.’s kidnapping in 1963.

What Other Roles Apart from Barry Allen, Grant Gustin Could Play in the DCU?

While the most obvious choice for Grant Gustin’s return to the DC Universe would be reprising the role of Barry Allen, there are exciting possibilities beyond that iconic role.

Since the DCU is shaping up to have a new Justice League cast, the door is open for a fresh take on The Flash. Gustin could potentially portray a different version of Barry Allen, offering a unique perspective on the character.

Drawing inspiration from the Arrowverse’s The Flash, he could take on the character of Jay Garrick in the DCU, just like how John Wesley Shipp did in The Flash during the 1990s. Gustin’s rendition of Jay Garrick could be featured in Justice Society of America movies set in the past, showcasing the character’s earlier years.

Gustin has expressed his love for sci-fi, making Adam Strange a fascinating possibility. Despite Adam Strange’s limited live-action appearances, particularly in the Krypton series, the character holds significant importance in the cosmic realm of DC.

A departure from his iconic portrayal of Barry Allen, Gustin could also consider taking on the role of The Doctor, offering a unique twist to his repertoire within the DC Universe. A complete shift could see Gustin playing Red Death, an evil Batman from another universe who becomes obsessed with speed and steals Barry Allen’s powers. This would be a daring choice, allowing Gustin to showcase his acting range while staying connected to the speedster world.

These are just a few ideas for Grant Gustin’s exciting potential in the DCU. With his talent and charisma, he’s sure to bring something special to whatever role he takes on.
