James Gunn directed Guardians of the Galaxy has been one of MCU’s most successful franchises. The three mainline movies and one television movie, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, have had a remarkable run at MCU with an astounding fanbase.
When Gunn left for DCU to run the studio with Peter Safran, his MCU tenure was officially over. Gunn had a transitory relationship with MCU as he was previously fired from the franchise. But thanks to the cast, they eventually rehired the director to finish the franchise. He was already in talks with DC by then. Now, Gunn teased the future of the celebrated superhero franchise at MCU.
James Gunn Teased the Future of His MCU Franchise
When Marvel President Kevin Feige told James Gunn that he was rehired for his franchise, Gunn told the Marvel boss about his moving to DC but agreed to finish his franchise. Feige understood the situation despite the MCU and the DCU always competing to be rivals. Still, Gunn and Feige have remained friends. Recently, speaking of the potential future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Gunn took to Threads to tease the possibility of another installment of the franchise but with a new director.
“Kevin and I are on great terms. Although a few characters aren’t coming back, I’d love for GotG to continue with the current members+ and I’d trust Kevin to pick the right person for that,” Gunn wrote on Threads.
Although Marvel has designed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to be the final movie of the franchise, there is always room for more. Also, a few major characters, including Star-Lord, may return for different MCU projects, but Zoe Saldana’s Gamora and Dave Bautista’s Drax may not return for their roles.

Will There Be a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4?
Gunn has always wanted the franchise to be a trilogy. At the European premiere (via Yahoo News), Gunn said,
“I was planning on it being three films and I was always planning on this story really being the story of Rocket. I knew that to fulfil that story, I really needed to go back to where he started.”
Also, earlier, responding to a fan’s query about a potential 4th installment on Threads, Gunn clearly wrote, “I think I’ll leave it at 3, sorry.” But even Gunn knew the possibility of another or more installments to the franchise despite his absence, and he has nothing against the idea.
“I think as long as somebody brings themselves to it, and doesn’t just try to copy that style— I think it can be really amazing. And there’s so many directors I would like to do that. And I would love to see it happen,” he told Esquire Middle East.
The fourth installment of the franchise would certainly be different, possibly exploring other aspects of the characters and their adventure. However, it is unlikely to happen anytime soon as the MCU is busy with several other scheduled slates.
