Specifically with the Black Panther and Captain Marvel franchises, Marvel Studios has walked alongside the very cultural demand for inclusivity. While these movies were successful until The Marvels, investors, primarily Peltz, have raised questions on Feige’s operation of Marvel Studios.

Kevin Feige has a glorious tenure as the president of Marvel Studios, creating a cinematic universe that has made around $30 billion at the box office (per The Numbers). However, with MCU facing a huge box-office setback with The Marvels, it has put Feige’s tenure in question. 81-year-old Nelson Peltz openly criticized MCU’s ‘woke’ strategy as he indirectly referred to two movie franchises.

But Black Panther and Captain Marvel are two strong movies that are hailed as box office smashers, with both movies grossing over a billion dollar mark. Appearing in a chat with Financial Times, Peltz, who is campaigning for two Disney board seats, condemns the current MCU strategy under Feige’s management.

“Why do I have to have a Marvel [movie] that’s all women? Not that I have anything against women, but why do I have to do that? Why can’t I have Marvels that are both? Why do I need an all-Black cast?” Peltz said.

Peltz’s cinematic ideals are different, particularly business-oriented. “People go to watch a movie or a show to be entertained. They don’t go to get a message,” he added. But fans are faithful to Feige and begged Disney not to fire the man in charge of the studio.

Feige’s strategic moves for the glorification of the franchised worked. The recent box-office debacle of The Marvels was the victim of the rise of the new phenomenon called ‘superhero fatigue’ and it is not exclusive to Marvel Movies. Their rival, DCU, has also faced adverse reactions. Still, Marvel Studios, as a superhero brand, is doing good with only a few flops. In this regard, Peltz further responded on whether he is willing to advocate Feige’s dismissal from the studio. “I’m not ready to say that, but I question his record.” Fans have responded as Feige was under criticism.

Such criticism of Marvel Studios is not new. In his memoir, The Ride of a Lifetime, Disney boss Bob Iger described the tension between Feige and Isaac Perlmutter.

“We had a chance to make a great movie and to showcase an underrepresented segment of America, and those goals were not mutually exclusive. I called Ike and told him to tell his team to stop putting up roadblocks and ordered that we put both ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Captain Marvel’ into production.” Iger wrote (via Variety).

Despite the scrutiny of Feige, fans will always hail the Marvel president for creating a superhero franchise that has become a huge cultural phenomenon.
