Although Ubisoft’s Far Cry 7 may still be quite far from release, there are enough rumors out there to keep the discussions alive and the community, waiting. Internally called Project Blackbird, Far Cry 7 is reportedly taking its time in Ubisoft Montreal’s development oven, and is expected sometime in 2025.
One of the leaks about Far Cry 7, which surfaced earlier last year, suggests that the game will be called ‘Far Cry: Rise.’ Besides, the rumor mill also has other details about the game’s setting, location, and more.
Far Cry 7 is rumored to touch on topics of power and privilege
It was earlier leaked that the game will be set in a fictitious tropical island called Kimsan. The island is reportedly located in the “Yellow Sea next to Korea”. It is also believed that the island has been captured by North Korean Insurgents, led by the antagonist named Choi Sang-Pil.
According to rumors, Far Cry 7 is set to have a non-linear story, that revolves around rescuing the player’s kidnapped family. It is believed that the game’s plot circles around a wealthy family, kidnapped by a conspiracy group called the ‘Sons of Truth’.
If the rumors are to be believed and based on how Far Cry 7’s alleged wealthy family is depicted, their trial while being held captive serves as a source of satire rather than just showcasing dramatic tension. In the past, there have been several films and TV shows like Knives Out, Parasite, and The White Lotus which satirized the affluent using narratives centered around dark and violent criminal activities.
A story centered around powerful and privileged individuals coming face-to-face with situations wherein their wealth can’t save them seems like a great setup for satire.
Why was Far Cry New Dawn controversial?
If the rumors are true, it won’t be the first time that the developer dives into real-world contentious subjects. In the past, Ubisoft has done it with several titles including Far Cry 5 and its spin-off Far Cry New Dawn.
New Dawn touched on the topic of homegrown violent extremism in the United States, putting players in the role of a new character arriving in Hope Country for the first time. It had a sensitive story revolving around a journey unfolding in the cult-infested Hope County.
At a time when the US was witnessing active political shifts, New Dawn‘s narrative had enough reasons why a game set in America about an extremist cult was considered a political commentary. Although the devs denied the game having any political message, they made multiple direct references to Donald Trump’s controversial Space Force.
Far Cry New Dawn was a post-apocalyptic take on the Far Cry 5‘s middle-American outing. It included an entire weapon line named after the US President’s planned cosmic branch of the armed forces.
If the rumors about Far Cry 7 are true, it could very well surpass New Dawn in terms of controversy. However, it depends on whether Ubisoft is ready to handle a controversial topic around the real-world rumblings over wealth inequality and its consequences
