Charlie Hunnam Dropped Out of Pacific Rim 2
Despite working with the Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro in his super successful sci-fi movie Pacific Rim in 2013, Charlie Hunnam dropped out of the sequel in 2018. Previously playing the titular character Raleigh Becket in the first installment, who was part and parcel of the story that portrayed a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures, Hunnam didn’t reprise his role.
During an interview with Collider, Charlie Hunnam finally revealed a scheduling issue that held him back from appearing in the 2018 Pacific Rim: Uprising. Further, discussing how he was a part of the sequel conversations when Guillermo del Toro was involved, Hunnam admitted dropping out of the project when they decided to make the film with Steven S. DeKnight, rather than del Toro.
“When Guillermo was talking about it, then yeah, definitely, I was a part of that conversation and I think that his vision for it included me. But by the time they circled around and decided that they were gonna make it with a different director, we had a conversation about it but I was booked up.”
Admitting that he didn’t watch the sequel to shield himself from the heartbreak, Charlie Hunnam mentioned that he isn’t quite sure if he regrets dropping out of Pacific Rim 2.
Charlie Hunnam Has One Condition For Return
On a more recent note, the Sons of Anarchy actor Charlie Hunnam finally spoke about his desire to make a comeback in Pacific Rim 3. With discussions of Guillermo del Toro finally returning for the third sequel, the actor noted his one simple condition for his return. Despite not being a part of Pacific Rim: Uprising, Hunnam still seems to have a clear love for del Toro’s process.
Thus, addressing the reports of Guillermo del Toro working on Pacific Rim 3, Charlie Hunnam noted his one condition for return. Through Inverse’s TikTok, the Rebel Moon star delivered his response.
“I would do anything that Guillermo was doing. If Guillermo invites me to do Pacific Rim 3, I’ll be there, or anything else he wants to do.”
Openly admitting that he will always be available to work with Guillermo del Toro, Charlie Hunnam noted his specific condition. Implying that he will only work in the third installment if del Toro directs it, Hunnam expressed his desire to reunite with the cast. Working with the filmmaker in Crimson Peak in 2015, after the success of Pacific Rim, Hunnam’s love and respect for del Toro appears to run deeper than mere loyalty.
