In a candid interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jon Bernthal discussed the moral nature of his Marvel character Frank Castle, aka the Punisher. He described the Punisher’s moral code as distinct from others, stating that, unlike Matt Murdock, “Frank has Hammurabi’s Code.”

The 47-year-old actor also emphasized the vigilante’s lack of concern over others’ opinions. He also highlighted the complex and morally ambiguous nature of his character and his controversial nature, as he hardly cares about offending others. Bernthal told Entertainment Weekly, 

“This character has resonated with law enforcement and military. He’s brought the war home with him in the worst possible way. And the best thing about him is that if he offends you, he just doesn’t care.”

The Walking Dead actor also shared how he prepared for such a character, as he shared insight into his origins and influences. He also talked about the pressure he felt while bringing the Punisher to life on-screen, as many urged him not to mess up the character.

Jon Bernthal Shared How He Prepared For His Role

During the interview, Jon Bernthal also shed light on the intense process of bringing the character of Punisher to life on screen. Sharing insight into the character’s origins and influences, he said that the character drew inspiration from Taxi Driver’s iconic malcontent Travis Bickle when shaping The Punisher.

He also emphasized that Punisher has a distinctive moral code that sets him apart. He acknowledged the weight of fan expectations he felt to do justice to the character, saying, “People have been coming up to me on the streets of New York saying, ‘Do not mess this up.'”

He also shared that he used to walk alone to the Daredevil set across the Brooklyn Bridge to immerse himself in Castle’s isolated and joyless mindset. The Daredevil actor captivated audiences with his promising portrayal of the unapologetic vigilante in the Netflix series and fans are also eager for his return in the MCU.
