Iain Armitage’s Young Sheldon had a huge task at hand when it kicked off in 2017 as the series had to live up to the success of its predecessor, The Big Bang Theory. The prequel show exceeded all expectations with its perfect cast and ran for seven great seasons before its conclusion on May 16, 2024. The series received critical acclaim and many fans felt that the series completed its run prematurely.
Armitage and creator Chuck Lorre were ready to return for an eighth season if they were given an opportunity. In an earlier interview, Armitage shared that while the seven-season idea of the series seemed a lot, it would’ve been incredible if they got to do an eighth season.
Iain Armitage Earlier Hoped That Young Sheldon Would Receive An Eighth Season
Iain Armitage‘s Young Sheldon finale was heartbreaking to watch. While fans knew that tragedy would strike the Cooper family, they were still not prepared for the major event in Sheldon’s life. The episodes received immense praise from critics and fans alike. However, fans were not entirely happy that the series had come to a conclusion.
The series finale ended when Sheldon joined Caltech University in Pasadena, California and the other Coopers were still dealing with the death in the family. CBS greenlit a spinoff series, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, in March 2024 and the series may not feature the other Young Sheldon cast.
Fans wanted to see more of the other characters too as their arcs still had plenty to be explored. The series could’ve fleshed out the story for a few more seasons as Armitage clearly expressed interest in them. During the 100th episode celebration of the series, Armitage spoke about whether his show could surpass TBBT in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
Armitage shared that he would love to do more of Young Sheldon. But he added that he was also cool with the show ending after seven seasons as well. He shared that he could never get tired of working with his great castmates and shared that if the show ever got to eight seasons, it would be incredible. Armitage shared with ET:
I would love [to do] more. I would be cool with whatever. I mean, we’ll see. I don’t think I could tire of these people. We have some pretty wonderful castmates but hey, [seven] seasons is a lot but if we get to eight that would be incredible.
Not just the actor, but creator Chuck Lorre was also interested in doing more. While he shared that the renewal of the show for more seasons was above his pay grade, he was up to the task if the “audience is still enjoying the show.” However, the age of the actors may have played a crucial factor in winding up the series, as it would’ve ruined the canon of The Big Bang Theory.
More Seasons Of Young Sheldon Could’ve Given TBBT A Run For Its Money
If Iain Armitage’s show made more seasons, it could’ve been a strong contender to beat its sequel. In the mind-blowing 12-season run of The Big Bang Theory, there were a few seasons and episodes that seemed to drag the show.
However, unlike TBBT, Young Sheldon‘s every season had substance in them and there were more potential stories to be explored if further seasons were made. Young Sheldon could’ve even surpassed the Jim Parsons sitcom that won seven Emmys with its episode/season count.
However, Young Sheldon‘s decision to conclude after seven seasons may have been informed by its predecessor’s prolonged run. It is possible that the producers reached the decision because they wanted to end it on a high note. However, it’s not the end of the TBBT Universe yet. Montana Jordan and Emily Osment will return to the new spinoff series, which will hit CBS in the fall of 2024.
