Call of Duty fans have always had an upper hand when it comes to debating with fellow Battlefield fans over the better game amongst the two, over many different comparisons. Campaign Creative Director at Sledgehammer Games, David Swenson, in an interview with Xbox recently mentioned that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 gamers will have options for their approach to OCMs (Open Combat Missions). Just as in the original Modern Warfare 3 from the franchise, where the approach was done much better, players can expect to have the same options in the upcoming reboot.

The confirmation comes much to the dismay of Battlefield fans who have been expecting something similar for years now. David confirmed players will have “an incredible level of choices” to make when planning their approach to OCMs. If players choose to go loud, they can choose the approach and the required armory to get the job done, or for a more stealth approach, players can choose to go ahead with the bare minimum including a set of knives for silent kills, eliminating the enemies with no witnesses or alarms.

David had also mentioned players will face a lot more challenging missions as they progress, and the options might help them when repeating the missions to decide which approach works best. The approach was also seen as an option back in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and in Modern Warfare 2 with the games having a unique approach to choose from.

Choices Influence Immersion and Grant an Elevated Experience

With Battlefield: Portal, the sandboxing mode that was released back in 2021, players had hoped for something to beat Call of Duty, finally. With the new mode, there were a lot of options to choose from for players that included maps, characters, armory from past Battlefield games. The mix and match approach shaped the way for the community to drive the game forward.

Battlefield‘s Sandbox approach was focused more on multiplayer battles and did nothing new to the single player campaigns. Battlefield: Portal breathed freshness to the franchise but the one thing that hardcore fans still missed was something the Call of Duty franchise kept improvising on. The approach to OCMs is not merely looked at as a stylistic choice but more of a necessary option to replay missions with whichever approach works best.

David emphasized on the fact that players will be able to sneak through entire mission levels by making use of vehicles, weapon crates, and hidden loot boxes, as well as a Killstreak that’s named “Armaments”. Players will also not require any kill streaks to earn them. The linear missions and cinematic experience that the Call of Duty franchise is so well known for, is there to stay and Modern Warfare 3 will continue the traditional campaign experience.

Another interesting factor that gamers are waiting to experience in the upcoming reboot is the face-off against the Zombies. As David has confirmed, Zombies in the game will be sent in one of the biggest maps ever in the franchise so far, with players squaring off in an “all-new open world”. Zombies will in fact be one of the major villains in Modern Warfare 3.

The decision to give Zombies their own big spotlight in the reboot in a massive map, has already sparked conversations and a lot of excitement among the fans. This decision highlights the franchise’s willingness to embrace new ideas as future titles look quite a lot interesting and will be just as highly anticipated as Modern Warfare 3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 releases in the US on the 10th of November, later this year.
