Bale’s projects range from superheroes to action, even drama and comedy are on the list, so it’s quite bizarre for him to say that he does not know anything about movies. Could there be a reason behind this fact?

Christian Bale Admits He Doesn’t Know Anything About Films

During his interview with GQ, actor Christian Bale revealed he is very much unschooled when it comes to the art of filmmaking. While other actors pursue a job in movies because of their love for acting, Bale is on the other side:

I’m a bit illiterate when it comes to films. I disappoint everybody with how little I know about film. I don’t think it matters. I don’t think you have to for what I do.”

It’s definitely strange to comprehend this statement because, after all the sacrifices he made for movie roles, such as body transformations and character study, he still claims he doesn’t know anything about movies.

Regardless, the actor feels satisfied with the kind of work he does for a living. Being an actor is not for everybody, and many fans have this notion that it’s a useless job. However, Bale stated:

I like the insanity of the job itself. I guess it’s the idea of what people think an actor is that’s embarrassing. I mean, how many useful jobs are there, really, in life, where you’re helping other people? Am I just creating more stupid background noise?

But for Bale, there is something very fascinating about being able to portray different people in different situations, all learned through observation.

The acting itself, I enjoy how ridiculous it is. I love something that you can just go too far with. People are f—king fascinating. I love people, I love watching people, and I get to watch them in a way that would otherwise be perceived as verging on extremely bizarre.”

Finally, he admitted he has no idea how he became successful in the field since he always plays the lead role. Bale confessed:

Zero strategy. I think some people mistakenly believe that I am a leading man, and it just keeps on going, and I don’t understand it.”

Bale said in the interview that he found acting as a means to support his family, but he still has a love-and-hate relationship with the job.

Despite Christian Bale’s doubts about his profession, and even though he is still clueless as to the inner workings of filmmaking, he remains grateful for having a job that allows him to share his talent. He said in the same conversation with GQ:

I’m totally grateful and surprised that I get to keep working, right? And you have to maintain that gratitude. But within that gratitude, that mustn’t mean you let standards slip, right? It doesn’t mean you start going, ‘Oh, I’m so happy and grateful to be working at all because I never expected this in my life,’ which is all true.”

Even though he is already a very successful A-list celebrity, Bale does not want to take it for granted, choosing to always give his one hundred percent in every role:

But that gratitude must turn into, therefore, ‘I must do things as absolutely well as I possibly can.’ But you get passionate characters in the world of filmmaking, right? Because sometimes caring can come across as a certain way for people who might, uh, get a bit overexcited at times.”

The dedication is quite evident in Bale’s willingness to undergo several body transformations. While he admits he’s not a fan of method acting, fans believe he actually does – and that’s already saying something about his devotion to certain movie roles.
