Lord of the Rings star Cate Blanchett started her career on the stage and had her international breakthrough in Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth, where she played the eponymous queen. She has since appeared in multiple critically acclaimed as well as blockbuster films. She also won the Academy Award twice, once for Best Supporting Actress for Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, and then for Best Actress in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.

While the actress has had huge success as both an actress, a theater director, and a producer, she revealed that she does not want to take up film directing. In an interview with Far Out magazine, she said,

“I get asked a lot, but for me, there are so many things I find enjoyable in the process of making a film, so many directors who I want to work with as an actor and producer, and it takes a long time…I’m slow as an actor. I’d be triply slow as a director. I also have four children and a garden. I know this is a cliche, but you do learn patience from gardening – and that is something I need to learn.”

The multi-talented personality had also revealed that she was considering retiring from acting.

Cate Blanchett is considered to be one of the greatest performers of the century. She has been nominated for the Oscars seven times, winning twice. She was most recently nominated in last year’s psychological drama Tar. The film saw her portray Lydia Tar, an orchestra conductor whose allegations of misconduct threatened her career.

The actress has since revealed that the role was very demanding and was physically and emotionally draining. In fact, the turmoil was so much that she considered quitting acting. In an interview with The Sunday Project, she said,

“I think it was because it was such a physical role, the echoes of it are still with me…I need time to process it…Obviously, I’m lucky enough to work with some amazing directors who have changed my life, but when it all comes together like that, it does stay with you…So I don’t ever want to work again.”

The actress also echoed the sentiment again recently while promoting her production venture The New Boy,

“I’ve been trying to get out of acting my entire professional life…For me, it’s about the conversation. And sometimes that conversation involves me being in front of the lens, and sometimes it’s back behind.”

The actress has not officially announced any retirement plans. While she has often expressed her love for gardening, it does not seem like she will exit the screens anytime soon as she will be next seen in Eli Roth’s adaptation of Borderlands.
