Back in 2013, Denzel Washington was tired from acting. Wanting to retire from the job and leave Hollywood, the actor felt like he was counting his final shots. As fate would have it, Washington went on to star alongside Viola Davis in the 2013 Broadway production of Fences. The play, adapted from the book of the same name, starred Denzel Washington and Viola Davis as the lead roles.

In an interview with The Telegraphthe actor revealed that working alongside Viola Davis reinvigorated his love for acting as he had a moment of clarity.

“As we get older, hopefully we get wiser and you start to realise how many shots do I have left? And the experience of working with Viola on Broadway was such a thrill. Watching her I realised I’m fighting for my life out there with this brilliant actress.”

He further continued,

“The whole process is where I am in my life right now. It reawakened me. I felt alive again and I said I want to apply that same work ethic to every job in terms of preparation, investigation, everything. No matter how big a movie is, I never want it to be just another gig. I don’t want that. Don’t want to know.’’

It is pretty obvious that Denzel Washington is a person who likes to add thrill to his life. Back in the early productions of Broadway when Washington was not famous, he had a sword fight with Morgan Freeman and Freeman had insulted him quite brutally.

Back when Washington graduated from college, the actor had the opportunity to star in a Broadway production of Coriolanus. Wanting to be the hero of the story, the actor revealed to The Kennedy Center that he had a talk with Morgan Freeman when Denzel Washington was a nobody at that time.

“He said to me: ‘First of all, what’s your name?’ I said: ‘You don’t know me, I’m Denzel’. He said: ‘Alright, Denzel. We click the swords three times, click click click. I stab you, you fall down, and you die. Quickly’.”

The tables turned quickly as Denzel Washington established a name for himself in Hollywood. Starring in several iconic roles, the actor is the recipient of 2 Oscars and will be seen in Gladiator 2 in the near future.
