Often times celebrities lead lives that we hardly know about. Just like any and all human beings they have their hobbies and pursuits and Morgan Freeman is no different. Apart from his love for acting, golfing, and aviation, the Hollywood legend is also fond of the sea and sailing. Oftentimes times he has spoken of his love for sailing and how, despite the calamities and storms, he loves the activity.
Even though he has been in many storms, the actor revealed once that he has never been afraid of them, rather he knew better to stand up and face them than give up.
Morgan Freeman Refused To Let The Sea Win
Morgan Freeman is a recipient of several awards and accolades, has been in multiple award-winning movies, and created several memorable characters. But despite the fame, he is a sailor at heart. Known all over the world for his acting genius, the actor relies on the sea for his ‘sense of peace’. In a 2018 Instagram post, the actor had stated,
“I’ve always loved the ocean – it’s where I feel the greatest sense of peace.”
Describing himself as “an avid sailor, a dyed-in-the-wool blue-water man” (The Guardian), the actor has battled through numerous treacherous waters and storms while at sea. In an interview with The Guardian, the actor revealed,
“I’ve been in dangerous storms. There comes a moment when you think you may not get through, and in that moment there’s a peacefulness that settles over you and you’re no longer afraid. That’s also the moment when you have to say, ‘I’m going to face this demon. I’m going to stand up and I’m going to do what I have to do. Not just by lying down and letting the sea wash over me, but by fighting it.'”
But despite the monstrous calamities, he has never lost his love or courage, instead, it has only made him stronger.
Morgan Freeman On Being a Good Sailor
The Shawshank Redemption star before being an Oscar-winning actor was in the US Air Force and has since also closely maintained a lifelong relationship with the sea. Always wearing gold earrings in respect for the sea, the actor revealed his tricks to being a good sailor.
“There are two or three tricks to being a good sailor. One is courage. You have to be willing to face the sea. And the rest is just knowledge – you can learn a lot by listening to other sailors about how to survive almost unsurvivable situations.”
And all through these years, he has remained steadfast in his devotion to the sea.
