Ryan Reynolds is widely known for his tongue-in-cheek humor. Luckily for him, Deadpool, which is probably the most popular role he has ever played, also has the same kind of humor and does not even mind taking digs at DC or Marvel, despite being a superhero (anti-hero, if you will).

Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool makes plenty of jokes in the movies. Although he is a Marvel character himself, he does not spare the Marvel Cinematic Universe or Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, for that matter. His fourth-wall-breaking humor sees him make the most unhinged jokes about the rival DC movie universe. However, if there is one thing about which the Merc with the Mouth does not like joking, it is his home country Canada.

Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool Does Not Appreciate This Dig at Canada

Both of the Deadpool movies see the titular superhero making a plethora of jokes, as already established. The second movie sees the superhero make jokes at the expense of some specific DC superheroes and movies.

In addition, if one looks closely, there are some subtle references to the same, implying that the superhero seems to have at least a little appreciation for DC. For instance, in the scene in which he and Weasel are interviewing candidates for the X-Force, a gun can be seen on the wall behind them, with the Joker’s BANG flag from the 1989 Batman hanging out of the barrel.

In the same scene, Weasel pokes fun at Canada while they are interviewing Shatterstar (via @historyinmemes on X) in an attempt to form an X-Force to save Russell from Cable. When Shatterstar reveals that he’s an alien from a planet called Mojoworld and that he enjoys hanging out on Earth because it’s nice to be in a place where he’s better than everyone else, Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool tells Weasel:

“Just once, I’m gonna find a planet of people that are worse than me at everything. A whole bunch of functional idiots. I’m gonna go there and I’m gonna be their Superman.”

Without a moment’s hesitation Weasel asks: “Isn’t that Canada?” Deadpool gets defensive at this question and angrily tells his friend to shut his mouth.

Fans Appreciated Deadpool Defending Canada

Had the superhero not defended Canada, there was a massive chance of fan backlash. Luckily, Deadpool’s defense has impressed fans who praised him for his patriotism. One of the fans wrote on X:

“Ryan Reynolds, a true Canadian hero with lightning-fast patriotism!”
