Josh Brolin had a stacked 2018 where he starred in two big comic book films. He first had his first full-fledged role as Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Fans up to that point have been anticipating the Mad Titan in its full glory after various teases in previous films. Three weeks after its release, Brolin had another release where she starred alongside Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 2.
The actor played the time-traveling soldier Cable in the film. It was a casting choice that had fans talking as the actor was playing two characters in the Marvel world although produced by separate entities at the time. Nevertheless, it raises concerns of confusion. However, director David Leitch and Fox loved Brolin as the character and managed to work things out.
Marvel and Fox Were Determined to Cast Josh Brolin as Cable
After the huge success of the first Deadpool film, Fox fast-tracked a second film with more wacky adventures featuring Ryan Reynolds’ merc with a mouth. The film also introduced Cable, played by Josh Brolin. Deadpool and Cable are shown as frenemies and their chemistry is one of the highlights of the film.
However, Brolin was not the first choice for the role as Brad Pitt was considered for the role originally (via Comicbook.com). Brolin was also not an ideal choice as he was already playing another Marvel character Thanos in the MCU. After Pitt backed out of the role, both Fox and Marvel worked out a way to cast Brolin as Cable.
Director David Leitch talked about this aspect in an interview with Cinemablend saying that the decision made sense because both Cable and Thanos are very different characters and function in their own specific ways. Leitch also claimed that they couldn’t have gotten a better actor to play the character than Brolin. He said,
“I think everybody in sort of the Marvel and Fox world considered it, and they take their time and make measured moves. But I think everyone thought it was prudent and was okay in terms of the way Thanos is portrayed and Cable is portrayed.
They’re very different in styles and in terms of the way they are presented in the movies, obviously. We couldn’t have cast a better Cable. We were filming last night and both of them were on set, and the chemistry is amazing. It’s such a fun movie to be on. I’m really grateful.”
Brolin excelled in both characters and general audiences were not confused with the characters as Thanos is a CGI character performed through motion capture while Brolin appeared in his physical form playing Cable. Both films were loved by fans and became huge box office successes.
Josh Brolin Has No Idea Whether He’ll Return as Cable in Marvel’s Future
Josh Brolin played Cable in Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 2. Fans were extremely pleased with his portrayal of the character and his chemistry his Reynolds’ Deadpool. The actor also loved playing the character and he talked during a panel at ACE Universe about how Deadpool 2 proved to be an exciting experience for him.
Brolin further stated that there were four Deadpool movies planned and he is not sure whether he will come back as Cable in future films. He admitted that he has no idea what Marvel is planning for Cable and the future of Deadpool. He said,
“Deadpool worked out very much in my favor. Deadpool was supposed to be four movies. Maybe there’ll be more – I don’t know what Marvel has in store – but it turned out to be one really fun movie for me.”
Reynolds’ Deadpool is set to return in the upcoming film Deadpool & Wolverine alongside Huge Jackman. There have been no reports of Cable appearing in the film. It remains to be seen whether the MCU will bring back Brolin to play the part in future films. Fans can watch the two Deadpool films on Disney+.
