The Flash was arguably the crown jewel of CW’s Arrow-verse. The longest-running show in the franchise, the final episode of the series aired on May 24th, 2023. After almost a decade-long run, Grant Gustin, who played the lead in the show as Barry Allen/Flash talked about his return as the Scarlet Speedster.
Having played the character for over a decade, Grant Gustin was first cast in the role on Arrow, starring Stephen Amell as the titular character. Since then, the character received its own show, The Flash, and facilitated other spin-offs, such as DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
Will Grant Gustin return as the Flash?
When asked about whether he would be open to suiting up as the Flash again, Gustin was enthusiastic with his answer. To Us Magazine, he said:
“I can’t wrap my head around it right now, obviously. But if someone called me today or tomorrow and was like, ‘Hey, we have this amazing Flash idea,’ obviously it’s like, I’m gonna take that phone call and listen to that idea,”
Gustin further explained his position on returning as the Flash, saying that he had a feeling that he would be associated with the character whether he returned or not. No doubt, Barry Allen is Gustin’s most iconic role, despite his time in another hit TV series, Glee.
The Flash star also said that he would be open to listening to any Flash pitch, and will always do so, because of how close the character is to him. Fans are definitely not complaining about this, having adored the actor playing Barry Allen since his first appearance in Arrow Season 2.
So, how likely is a Flash project in the near future?
Unfortunately, despite his enthusiasm, it doesn’t seem like Gustin will be getting a chance to play the Scarlet Speedster anytime soon. The Glee actor has said that he has received no calls, but is still open to the role if a noteworthy pitch comes forward.
Fans have also been clamoring to see Gustin in the newly almost-established DCU, headed by James Gunn. The DCEU’s Flash film reset the universe and could favor such a recast. However, the studio seems to be going ahead with Ezra Miller as the Flash for the foreseeable future. The current trajectory that James Gunn has taken when casting his DCU might lead to a completely new actor to be cast as the Flash, instead of Ezra Miller or Grant Gustin.
