David Frankel’s comedy-drama, The Devil Wears Prada, released under the banner of 20th Century Fox, gained a huge fandom right after its release in 2006. With an ensemble female cast including industry veteran Meryl Streep, alongside Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt, the movie was a huge hit grossing over $326 million worldwide against a production budget of $41 million.
Streep has been playing several different roles in her career and almost had no problems diving into the realms of these characters. However, The Devil Wears Prada was somewhat different. She pushed her co-stars, Hathaway and Blunt away, even when the cameras were not rolling.
Meryl Streep Revealed Sulking Alone While Filming Iconic 2006 Fashion Movie
Meryl Streep has been one of the greatest and most sought-after actors in Hollywood, with astounding accolades to her name playing several different roles in her career. David Frankel’s infamous cinematic adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s novel of the same name stars Streep as Miranda Priestly. Her character demanded grains of rudeness, and it was somewhat reflected in her even behind the scenes. Her co-stars, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt revealed earlier revealed how Streep would push them away while sulking alone.
“But I’m naturally in a bad mood, so, it was not that difficult… And I couldn’t enjoy myself on the set in the way that I’m accustomed to. And fooling around with everybody because I, it just didn’t serve the dynamic on the, in the movie. If I kinda broke out of it and palled around with everybody. So, I kinda stayed to myself and sulked,” Streep said (via Entertainment Tonight).
Understandably, it was the demand of the character. Streep’s performance in The Devil Wears Prada was astonishing. The actor was nominated for an Oscar for her role in the 2006 film at the 79th Academy Awards.
Meryl Streep Was Not Happy Losing The Oscar For The Role
Streep lost her 2007 Oscar to legendary actor Helen Mirren, who has had a career spanning over six decades. Mirren bagged the Oscar for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in Stephen Frears’ The Queen. Streep jokingly told Access Holywood that she was upset with losing the prestigious award.
“It’s just another loss looming on the landscape. I have lost more than any other human being, do you realize that? I know but that’s the way I look at the world. Two Oscars, 11 losses. So, look at it I could make it an even dozen,” Streep said.
Blunt and Hathaway, who played Streep’s assistants in the film, also performed wonderfully with their breakthrough roles. But the two-time Oscar winner’s star power was acutely evident on and off the screen. Streep’s glory remained with the role alongside her co-stars as the movie stood the test of time and still has a devout fanbase worldwide.
