Michael Keaton is one of the most popular actors in Hollywood, contributing to the cinematic world for decades. The actor was among the few who donned the superhero costume in the early 90s when comic book movies were yet to become a mainstream genre. The actor played the role of Batman in the 1989 film Batman. The actor surprised his fans when he reprised the role in the 2023 film, however, he did not say yes to the script after the first reading.
Michael Keaton reprised his role as Batman in DC Studio’s film The Flash, released a few months ago. The actor revealed the bizarre reason for reading the script multiple times before accepting the role.
Michael Keaton read the script of The Flash three times
Michael Keaton played the role of Batman in two movies, namely Batman in 1989 and Batman Returns in 1992. The star got the chance to reprise his role after a long duration of three decades. He returned as the cape crusader for Ezra Miller’s 2023 film, The Flash. The actor did not take long to get back in the mindset of Gotham City’s protector, however, he had a hard time understanding the script.
The actors shared in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter about needing time to figure out the story of Miller’s DC film The Flash. Keaton shared,
“I had to read it more than three times to go, ‘Wait, how does this work?’ They had to explain that to me several times. By the way, I’m not being arrogant, I hope, about this. I don’t say it like, ‘I’m too groovy.’ I’m stupid. There’s a lot of things I don’t know about. And so, I don’t know, I just kind of figured it out, but this was different.”
The actor shared that he had difficulty in understanding because his comic book knowledge was lacking. The complicated time travel of The Flash comic book arc was used in the plot, which was not easy for the star to understand.

Michael Keaton highly values his Batman role in The Flash
Michael Keaton took some assistance in understanding the film plot, however, he shared that he respects the role offered to him. He explained,
“What’s really interesting is how much more I got [Batman] when I went back and did him. I get this on a whole other level now. I totally respect it. I respect what people are trying to make. I never looked at it like, ‘Oh, this is just a silly thing.’ It was not a silly thing when I did Batman. But it has become a giant thing, culturally. It’s iconic. So I have even more respect for it because what do I know? This is a big deal in the world to people. You’ve got to honor that and be respectful of that. Even I go, ‘Jesus, this is huge.'”
Keaton’s film, The Flash, was released in June 2023 but failed to perform at the box office. The film grossed $268.5 million worldwide.
The Flash is available for streaming on Max.
