Actors are often tasked with pursuing sequences that require them to do things that they’re not quite accustomed to. Such scenes are known for their challenging nature and necessitate the talent to delve deep into the roles they portray. Undertaking an in-depth emotional exploration can hence, at times, prove laborious. For Rupert Grint‘s Ron Weasley, one of such scenes from the Harry Potter film series could be witnessed in the final installment.

Grint revealed in a conversation with Collider the specific scene from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 that prompted him as an actor to strive harder and push his limits:

“…This film, in particular, is the first time I really had to (strive) … especially when Ron loses his brother. That was quite a big scene with the whole Weasley family. It was a depressing scene to do because you’ve got Fred lying on the floor and it’s quite shocking because it’s a character we’ve associated with jokes and mucking about. It’s quite horrible.”

Here, the sequence referenced by the Knock at the Cabin alum displays the aftermath of Fred Weasley’s death, who is killed during the events of the Battle of Hogwarts. The viewers are left to witness the Weasley family mourning the passing of their loved one. Reflecting upon this tragic death scene in his interview with Collider, Rupert Grint recalled feeling both “satisfied” and “haunted”—the latter of which he associated with his on-screen inexperience:

“Yeah, it’s satisfying. But it’s quite haunting as well because I’m not really used to it. But I’ve learned quite a lot and it’s been great.”

A compelling narrative is often known for having characters who, despite being known for their joyous, vivacious, and cheerful demeanor, are required to go through a character arc that develops their personalities from exhibiting one-dimensional qualities to something that feels more human and realistic. This additionally gives actors a spectrum of emotions to work with to properly convey such a multifaceted depiction. The Harry Potter films are successful in their approach to doing so.

In an interview, the renowned actress was questioned by JoBlo about whether or not she ever felt shocked by her Harry Potter co-workers’ acting abilities. To this, she affirmed, “All the time.”

Following was Emma Watson’s statement:

“… In Part 2, there’s a scene where Rupert’s brother dies and the amazing thing about Rupert is that he’s a very self-contained human being. It’s very rare that you see him get emotional. The minute the camera rolls, he just becomes this other thing and he has so much, and I’m like, ‘Where does that come from?’”

The Little Women alum then recounted the time when Grint’s on-screen expertise made her almost forget she needed to keep acting:

“Anyway, there’s a scene where he cries and I remember having to remind myself to keep acting because I just wanted to go, ‘You’re amazing! That was amazing!’ I don’t know where he pulled it from.”

Such a response from Rupert Grint’s longtime co-star only serves to highlight the brilliance of the actor. One of the most beloved characters in literature history, Ron Weasley has wowed both audience members and fans of the franchise. Grint is to be commended for giving life to the on-screen portrayal of this multifaceted fictional personality.
