Prior to Wahlberg’s selection for the film, the initial choice for the role of Jack Salmon was none other than Ryan Gosling. Ryan Gosling Wanted Mark Wahlberg To Replace Him
Regarding the alteration in the casting decision, producer Fran Walsh shared with The Hollywood Reporter that Ryan Gosling had raised concerns about being a suitable fit for the role, expressing that he felt he was too young for the part. The production team, however, was eager to make it work, suggesting solutions like aging him up and altering his appearance, demonstrating their strong commitment to having him on board.
“Ryan came to us two or three times and said, ‘I’m not the right person for this role. I’m too young,’. And we said, ‘No, no, no. We can age you up. We can thin your hair.’ We were very keen.”
Fortunately, Mark Wahlberg was prepared to step in and assume the role that Gosling had vacated. Nonetheless, upon reflection, the part may have been more challenging than the actor initially anticipated. In fact, he openly acknowledged that he underwent a period of “emotional torment” following his involvement in the dramatic film.
