Zendaya portrayed Chani, the love interest of Timothée Chalamet’s character Paul Atreides in the 2021 film Dune and its sequel. Prior to the film’s release in October 2021, Zendaya acknowledged that her role in the first installment of the Dune franchise was relatively small.

In an interview with Empire, she stated, “My part is very, very small in this movie. That’s why I’m so excited to see it, to see what everyone’s been up to.”

Zendaya discussed her discussions with director Denis Villeneuve about Chani’s character and her strength as a fighter, expressing enthusiasm for exploring her character’s nuances.

While speaking to La Repubblica in a past interview, Denis Villeneuve talked about having Zendaya audition for her role in Dune. The director made it clear that he was sorry for having her audition, adding that he simply did not know her.

“When I did the casting for Chani’s character, I met a lot of actresses. Zendaya wanted to audition and today, after shooting the film and seeing what a wonderful actress she is, I’m sorry I auditioned her. It was just because I didn’t know her. However that day, she impressed me and when she left the studio I knew that Chani was her, the young desert tiger. I am honored to present two such explosive talents on screen [Chalamet and Zendaya] and I can’t wait to shoot the second part of ‘Dune’ to get them back together. Knowing that in the next chapter Zendaya will be the protagonist of the story.”

Denis Villeneuve was clearly right in signing Zendaya, as she has proven to be one of the best things in the entire franchise and will no doubt steal the show in the next movie as well.

”I love lady Jessica because she’s terrifying and I think Rebecca is so brilliant at bringing that character to life when she uses the voice and all that stuff I just I find it so fun. I also think that everybody secretly wants to be Fade Rala too because it just seems like such a fun character to play.”

However, Zendaya then added that everyone secretly wanted to portray Fade Rala as well simply because it seemed like such a fun character to play. Nonetheless, fans are happy Zendaya is Chani and that is all that matters.
