The Hunger Games franchise is one that fans cherish not only through Suzanne Collins’ books but also through Jennifer Lawrence’s outstanding performance as Katniss Everdeen in the movies. The movies remain rather loyal to the books in a way that the franchise is easily one of the most liked when it comes to Young Adult fantasy and dystopian genres.

Focusing on the story and not the medium, Katniss’s story was one following some of the greatest challenges a teenager like her could not even imagine facing. However, overcoming that and rising to the top is what made her such a symbol not only for District 12 but also for those who could not stand up for themselves. Since the series has long since concluded, Lawrence expressed her willingness to return as the character but only under one condition; the thematic concerns.

Jennifer Lawrence Will Only Return as Katniss Everdeen for One Reason

In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Francis Lawrence and Nina Jacobson talked about how and what would inspire them to bring Jennifer Lawrence back into the world of The Hunger Games even though her franchise was long since concluded. The actress previously responded to the question about whether or not she would be open to returning as Katniss Everdeen. Her reply had been positive regarding the same, stating that she was more than open to the idea. However, the perspective comes with further layers.

“I think that if for whatever reason she had some thematic idea that made sense to tell another Katniss story, I’d be in, and then I’m sure Jen would be in. But it really all comes from theme and idea, and Suzanne.”

Katniss’s story was one that ended in a dramatic yet satisfactory manner. She went through several ups and downs, lost people she cared for, and fought her own battles. In this journey, she saw an ending as well. One that had her settled with Peeta in the aftermath of the various fights she was forced into since her childhood. According to Francis Lawrence, the only manner as to why the actress would be returning would be if Suzanne Collins sees a future in the story as well.

“If [author] Suzanne [Collins] has something to say, then she’ll write a book about it. Honestly, as much as I love Katniss, I think her story is complete.” She added: “And I think that Suzanne feels that her story is complete. But if that changes, and Suzanne has something she wants to say, and it involves Katniss, then I would be thrilled. But really any chance to be back in this world, and lead with [director] Francis [Lawrence] and Suzanne, I would take regardless of who it was about.”

If the author finds a way in which Katniss can continue her story, then the producers and directors would be more than open to the idea of bringing her iconic character back. If she can figure out a way to bring the thematic concerns that match her character back into play then another movie would not be too far-fetched of an idea. However, this does seem to be highly unlikely.

Katniss Everdeen’s Deserved Ending

By the end of the The Hunger Games trilogy Katniss Everdeen has lost a significant part of herself, Primrose Everdeen. Although many might not see it as too much, losing her sister was her last straw. It was the only thing keeping her connected to her own self. Prim was a part of her she had always wanted to be. Prim was the one she had always wished to protect. It was her volunteering for Prim that started it all in the first place. Primrose Everdeen was a side of Katniss who died.

The ending is the beginning of a new age, away from the torture people away from the Capitol had to suffer through. Katniss settled down with Peeta but a part of herself lay buried within the horrid history that otherwise stained the soils of Panem. Katniss’s story ended, she, along with all her worries, came to a rest. She could finally breathe. In her twisted reality, she found one spec of hope. So to have a revival of the character who has already gone through so much might be milking a cow to its bitter end.
