Adapted from the 1965 epic science fiction novel book by Frank Herbert, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies are making quite the buzz on the internet. Following the release of the first installment, the filmmaker is now making Dune: Part Two which is arriving imminently. But what’s after the sequel?
Asking Denis Villeneuve about the future of the Dune franchise, The Playlist learned a disappointing update from the director. Willing to learn if there will be a potential Dune 3, especially after Christopher Nolan showered his praise over the upcoming sequel, Villeneuve opened up about his desire to take a break.
Christopher Nolan’s Highest Praise for Dune: Part Two
The buzz surrounding Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two happened all because of the staggering success of Dune (2021) featuring Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, and a handful of stellar cast. The first installment of the franchise made such an impact on audiences and the box office at large, that the sequel has now become a highly anticipated movie.
Dune: Part Two is arriving imminently and fans are extremely excited to learn about Paul Atreides’ journey, with the power of the desert by his side. Featuring Austin Butler in a villainous role, the film has created immense buzz online. Even Christopher Nolan shared his highest praise for the upcoming sequel.
Christopher Nolan is someone who doesn’t usually go around throwing compliments like confetti. But during a recent conversation with Denis Villeneuve, via Marca, Nolan offered his highest compliment to Dune 2 and noted how impressed he is with the upcoming sequel.
“For me, if Dune Part One was ‘Star Wars,’ this [Part Two] … was very much The Empire Strikes Back, which is my favorite of the Star Wars films. It’s an … exciting expansion of [everything] you introduced in the first one.”
Offering the highest imaginable praise to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, Christopher Nolan stunned the director himself. Earning the massive compliment from someone like Nolan, even Villeneuve got flabbergasted.
Denis Villeneuve’s Disappointing Update About Dune 3
Meanwhile, after having a conversation with Christopher Nolan and earning his honest appreciation, Denis Villeneuve sat for an interview with The Playlist. Given how the upcoming sequel is planned to end, the outlet asked Villeneuve about the third film. Curious about the third installment, the outlet hoped to know when the director is planning to release the threequel.
Unfortunately, Denis Villeneuve’s reply didn’t seem to match the enthusiasm with which the question was thrown at him. Asked about the third installment, the director dropped a disappointing update about the potential future of Dune 3. Claiming that he’s still unsure about the third installment, Villeneuve noted that he might take a break from the planet Arrakis.
“Listen, you’re sweet, but I’m doing press for ‘Part Two,’ and once the movie is out, I intend to go back into the snow and dream a little bit to see if I’m going back to Arrakis right away or if I’m taking a detour just for mental sanity, to take a little distance and get rejuvenated. I have other stories I want to tell.”
“The first script that’s ready to go in front of cameras [will be the one]. The thing I don’t want to do is make compromises, those books are precious, too important to me. If I bring ‘Dune: Messiah’ to the screen, it has to be with the best screenplay possible, and I want to make sure we don’t compromise.”
Unwilling to compromise the storyline of the iconic novels from Frank Herbert, Denis Villeneuve noted that he would “bring ‘Dune: Messiah’ to the screen” only if they had the “best screenplay possible”. So as of now, we know Dune: Part Two is hitting the theatres on 15 March 2024. But for the third installment, we might have to wait longer than expected.
