The Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts, who is known for her impeccable presence on-screen, has returned to the silver screen following a brief break in 2022 with the romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise. Starring Roberts alongside George Clooney, the film follows a divorced couple who find themselves reflecting on their feelings for each other as they try to stop their daughter’s wedding.
While the movie performed pretty well, the decision to return to romantic comedies might have been challenging for her, particularly due to her reluctance towards the genre in recent years, as she has previously disclosed.
Julia Roberts Shared Her Reluctance Towards Romantic Comedies in Later Years
After gaining worldwide recognition with the 1990 film Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts has starred in several hit movies, along with some of the best romantic comedy films of all time, such as My Best Friend’s Wedding and Notting Hill.
While her career thrived starring in rom-com movies at one point, the actress became reluctant towards the same as she entered her 40s. Roberts believed that such scenarios surrounding a character around her age might seem “silly.” As per the Irish Examiner, the actress said,
“I think I’m too old for those silly situations of unrequited love! It becomes less plausible when you’re in the 40s to be walking down in the hallways because a boy walks by!”
The Pretty Woman star shared that she had read some scripts that follow a “more original and more mature” narrative, but she did not find them compatible with her career trajectory at the time. “They just didn’t seem to fit for me,” she said.
However, despite her reluctance towards the genre, the actress has clarified that it’s not a matter of disinterest but a lack of quality scripts, that she found in Ol Parker’s 2022 film, which ultimately led her return to the beloved romantic comedy movies.
Julia Roberts Did Not Find Any Suitable Script For Her Return to Rom-Com
While Roberts has done romantic comedies, she has mostly had brief roles in movies like Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, along with headlining the 2011 film Larry Crowne alongside Tom Hanks, which received mixed to negative reviews.
And when she eventually returned with the 2022 romantic comedy film Ticket to Paradise, the actress revealed the reason she had kept a distance from the genre. In an interview with The New York Times, Roberts clarified that she has been avoiding starring in romantic comedies, primarily due to the lack of good scripts.
“If I had read something that I thought was that Notting Hill level of writing or My Best Friend’s Wedding level of madcap fun, I would do it.”
And the 56-year-old actress finally found what she had been looking for in Ol Parker’s 2022 film Ticket to Paradise. And she was enthusiastic about working with her fellow actor and frequent collaborator George Clooney in the movie.
Ticket to Paradise is available on Prime Video.
