Tom Selleck was the first choice for Indiana Jones

Indiana Jones is known for its cinematic brilliance and the old-school charisma of the actor Harrison Ford. It would be difficult to imagine any other actor playing the role of Indy. However, truth be spoken, the role was initially offered to the FRIENDS fame Tom Selleck.

Harrison Ford acknowledged the fact at the Italian premiere of his final Indy film, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. He gave a shoutout to Selleck for passing the role many years ago.

“How I got the job? Tom Selleck had the job, but he also incurred an obligation to do a television series and he was unable to get out of that contract. I became the second choice, and I’m very grateful for Tom. Thank you, Tom, man. If you’re listening, thank you again.”

For the uninitiated, Ford starred in A New Hope in 1977 and got his next big opportunity with 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, which cemented Ford’s status as a leading action man. However, he only got the role because Selleck dropped out from the film due to his contractual obligations to the TV show Magnum P.I.

Would Indiana Jones be successful Without Harrison Ford?

The Indiana Jones franchise offered a magnificent display of filmmaking craft, particularly Raiders of the Lost Ark, which is one of the classics, with Steven Spielberg’s excellent direction. The action in the film was thrilling and exquisitely captured. The story of each film of the franchise was interesting and had a mythological connection. Despite the presence of Ford, the film had all the ingredients to make a superhit series.

Indiana Jones is one of the most iconic roles of Ford’s career, and it would not be wrong to say that the role was tailored for him. The actor played the role of an archeology professor and was loved for his action sequences, wit, and humor. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark would not have been unsuccessful with Tom Selleck as the lead actor. However, after more than 40 years, Ford seems to be the perfect choice for Indiana Jones movies.

The actor was given a standing ovation for his work in the Indiana Jones franchise at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny releases in theatres on 30 June 2023.
