Phase 3 of Marvel Cinematic Universe remains Marvel Studios’ most successful period, as their Avengers titles grossed billions of dollars at the box office. This led to Marvel figureheads going bullish during Phase 4 rather than slowing down to reshape their strategy after the end of the epic battle involving Iron Man and Thanos.
The chaotic nature in which Marvel introduced so many new characters as well as the concept of the multiverse didn’t work well at the box office and also reflected within their fandom, as many dedicated fans were left less than impressed with the studios’ plans. Their disappointment has also followed Phase Five, leading to Iman Vellani assuring fans that it’s not all doom and gloom.
Iman Vellani Sends Message to Marvel Fans As The Marvels Receive Backlash
Phase 4 also saw the introduction of Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan in the television series Ms. Marvel, which didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Most recently, the Captain Marvel super fan was paired with her hero in The Marvels. The plot of the Brie Larson-led movie sees the powers of her character, Carol Danvers, entangled with those of Kamala and Monica Rambeau.
The superhero fatigue that first got any mention during the fallout of Phase Four, has only intensified in recent times, with The Marvels also facing backlash from fans for its forced comedy sequences and lack of coherence throughout the storyline. All early figures suggest the 33rd MCU film is set to be one of its biggest flops of all time.
Amid this run, many aspects of the MCU could be looked at and improved, but when Vellani was asked by Slash Film to share her thoughts on what she thinks needs to be addressed, she said she’d like to see improvement within the fandom. She said:
“I think people need to be a little more positive. These fandoms, the whole point of them is so that people who are passionate about these nerdy things, they can talk about it without being judged and can share their excitement with the only other people in the entire world who will reciprocate. So, it would just be like Marvel, they’re growing and they’re adjusting to the times, they’re listening and responding to the fans’ criticisms and feedback. So I think people just need to be a little patient, and let them cook. I think keep the fandom positive in the meantime, share what you are enjoying.”
To be fair, the mood of the community of Marvel fans largely depends on what the MCU figureheads deliver. Most of the time, if they do justice to their characters, fans appreciate their work. The same has been seen with their positive reactions to Tom Hiddleston’s Loki Season 2.
How Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan Excited Fans About the Future of the MCU
Even The Marvels ending managed to send a few fans into a frenzy despite the female-led movie’s underwhelming box office collection.
After getting the better of Kree leader Dar-Benn, Carol and Kamala return to Earth. But the young superhero didn’t stop there. She meets archer Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to discuss her plans of forming a young version of Avengers, and even mentions the daughter of Scott Lang for the supposed “much larger universe.”
What this means for the future of the MCU remains unclear, but the apparent reenactment of the legendary scene between Nick Fury and Tony Stark was enough to excite plenty of Marvel die-hards.
