“In 1 sense, you do have a vehicle”: Bethesda Has a Very Scientifically Accurate Explanation Why Starfield Has No Ground Vehicles

Starfield was released globally for all gamers and to all Xbox GamePass subscribers as well, two days back on the 6th of this month. With the game getting mostly positive reviews on both Xbox consoles and PC, Bethesda recently also claimed the game has already surpassed 6 million players as of yesterday, making it the biggest Bethesda game launch of all time. Starfield feels very much like a Bethesda game of the past with the AI reacting or at times not reacting at all in certain situations, with many gamers calling it more artificial and less intelligent.

Starfield is an interstellar space adventure with a variety of customization tools for gamers to create a variety of spaceships, from a Millennium Falcon replica to a Mech Ship that looks like a spaceship straight out of a Michael Bay movie. With the game lacking a ground vehicle, Game Director Todd Howard himself had to come out with the reasoning behind the lack of it.

A Million Gamers Played Starfield Concurrently On Release Day

The reviews and ratings for Starfield have been impressive

Xbox Head Phil Spencer congratulated Bethesda Game Studios and thanked all the players for reaching a milestone on Starfield release day. Spencer mentioned that a million gamers played Starfield on Day One concurrently, combining PC and Xbox gamers. There was no breakdown between the two platforms the game was released on, but that still makes the achievement quite impressive. Gamers were quick to respond to Spencer’s post on X (formerly Twitter), with many congratulating Bethesda on having released a polished, well-made game with nearly no major bugs.

Starfield also opened to impressive reviews from most major gaming websites and news publishers rating it an average of 9/10. Bethesda had earlier delayed the game by a further year after the first look of the game disappointed many gamers last year when it was first revealed. By comparison, gamers were quickly impressed and happy with Bethesda’s delay bearing fruit after witnessing all the first looks and trailers with glimpses shown at Gamescom last month.

Starfield is not perfect in all sense either. There are certain issues related to NPC reactions and while the game gives everyone the freedom to create spaceships, there are no land vehicles in the game, weirdly.

Todd Howard Comes Out In Defense Of Starfield Lacking Ground Vehicles

Starfield Game Director Todd Howard has come up with quite a scientific reason behind the logic of the game not having a ground vehicle. Howard mentioned that since each planet has a varying degree of gravity, having a land vehicle that moves around like they do on planet Earth, wouldn’t have been a good idea. He went on to say that gamers have the option to unlock an upgradeable jetpack in the game to move around on planets. Here’s the quote from his recent interview with In an interview with Bloomberg earlier this week:

In one sense, you do have a vehicle, you obviously have your spaceship so you can go around space, but then on the surface, you do have a jetpack which you can upgrade. Which is super fun—[a] new experience for us. And obviously, planets have different levels of gravity, which makes that unique for many planets,”

Starfied is a massive game as players can visit up to 1000 planets in the game, and when exploring certain humongous planets, a jetpack will most definitely feel quite useful.

YouTuber CheesyWhales has gone the extra mile to have his character in the game look resemble Game Director Todd Howard, as much as possible. His effort, as shown above, looks quite close to Howard. Other notable characters recreated in the game include Ryan Gosling from 2049, Walter White from Breaking Bad, Tony Soprano from The Sopranos, George Constanza from Seinfeld, and many more.

Modders will no doubt bring even better recreations of more famous personalities, bringing more fun factor to the game. Starfield is now available to purchase and play, starting at $69.99 for the Standard Edition, while gamers can also subscribe to Xbox GamePass to play for a lot less.
