The Last of Us Part 2 was arguably one of the biggest and most controversial video games in gaming history. Not everyone was a fan of the creative decisions that the developers took; there are still some things to marvel at in the narrative and others that deserve the hate.

Some fans still can’t wrap their heads around the direction that the developers took and how it made them even more uncomfortable with one particular scene. The central theme of the sequel is about violence and how it makes people lose sight of what matters most.

The sequel was perfect in terms of gameplay and the developers outdid themselves with the refined gore and dismemberment system in The Last of Us Part 2. Unfortunately, the narrative was not as well-received as the director had hoped and how Druckmann handled certain characters struck a nerve with the gaming community. The story of the sequel took Ellie on a revenge quest to find those who wronged her and became more and more violent along the way, showing no signs of remorse.

In her quest for vengeance, Ellie stumbles into Owen and a pregnant Mel, and after a brief altercation that leads to their untimely demise, the players feel a great deal of discomfort, not knowing that Mel is pregnant. Some are saying that this is the worst scene in the game because it failed to deliver the emotion the director intended.

Perhaps the studio underestimated the gaming community and this made them even angrier than they should be. The story of the sequel is much darker than the original and the developers intended the players to go on this dangerous path with Ellie and question certain decisions to achieve what the characters believe are rightfully theirs.

The realistic approach of the developers is greatly overlooked. The average person would make stupid and questionable mistakes that would lead to another until they snowball down the hill and lead to perilous consequences.

The acts of vengeance and violence took a toll on the characters and the players on an emotional level, and those who are on the sticks could not help but question the decisions of the characters like Jesse and Tommy entering the aquarium after Ellie murdered both Owen and Mel. Rather than taking the time to rally, the trio opted to escape and left a trail for Abby and Lev to follow.

None of the characters were seeing the bigger picture, which irritated the fans and rightfully so. It is unfortunate to see the highly anticipated sequel take a turn that no one expected nor wanted at the hopes of the developers of being ambitious.

Perhaps Druckmann will use his time working on Part 2 as a learning experience for the inevitable sequel and whatever else the studio will be working on beyond The Last of Us and Uncharted.
