Iñaki Godoy Has Begun Training For His Role in Netflix’s One Piece Season 2

Mexican actor Iñaki Godoy plays the role of Monkey D. Luffy in the live-action series. He is the only character to have featured in each Season 1 episode. A part of many memorable action sequences, the 20-year-old did most of his own stunts as Luffy.

Given that Luffy has the power of the Gum-Gum Fruit that makes him stretch like rubber, Iñaki Godoy’s flexibility is also constantly tested. A few Luffy scenes were created by CGI while others need to be enacted and performed by the actor himself.

To keep himself in shape and prepare for the role of Monkey D. Luffy, Godoy did a lot of gymnastics and acrobatic work. A recent update shared on X by @dailyinakigo means that he is back to hitting the mat to prepare for One Piece Season 2. Iñaki Godoy can be seen trying to pull off somersaults in the footage.

Godoy took the challenge of completing 100 backflips in a row. He subsequently shared an Instagram Story titled “Training arc”, alluding to the many ‘arcs’ that the One Piece manga possesses, ahead of One Piece Season 2. The live-action Monkey D. Luffy also seems to be fond of overcoming challenges.

One Piece VFX Supervisor Praised Iñaki Godoy’s Stunts

Godoy’s ‘rubbery’ fight style as Luffy needed a few CGI elements. After all, his finishing moves include a punch from a massively outstretched arm (Gum Gum Pistol) and two outstretched arm punches (Gum Gum Bazooka). Nonetheless, the most basic scenes that required body stretching and flexibility were incredibly pulled off by the 20-year-old.

Victor Scalise, VFX Supervisor for One Piece Live-Action, praised Iñaki Godoy’s stunt abilities during an interview with The Daily Express US.

He did a lot of his own stunts. When it came to the punches, his body performance was so good. A lot of the time we were just taping over his shoulder to the arm, or the hip down for the leg. So we weren’t always painting him out of the scene… There’s a couple of ones we did all CG, but a lot of it is him in there. And it was due to his performances being so good.”

Although fairly new to being a lead, Iñaki Godoy has a lot of acting experience on his resume. Fans hope he continues delivering his best during the One Piece Season 2 production.
