True Detective on HBO gained momentum from the very beginning when Nic Pizzolatto premiered the first season of the show starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. The story, the performances, and every bit and piece of the it was praised by critics and audiences alike. Soon, the show spawned more seasons, but none compared to the very first one.
Then Pizzolatto took a step back, and Lopez came in as the new creator for the fourth season of the show. And that’s when things took a turn for the better. Starring fwo female leads – Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, True Detective: Night Country became the new favorite, and it seems like show creator Nic Pizzolatto didn’t like that a bit.
Nic Pizzolatto on True Detective: Night Country
When Night Country premiered, creator Issa Lopez gained a lot of positive reviews for the story, alongside the two leads of the season – both female. Jodie Foster, an industry veteran, and Kali Reis – the newcomer – both managed to capture the audience’s attention and gave amazing performances throughout the season.
But show creator Nic Pizzolatto, seeing the success of the fourth season, seemed a little miffed. He began liking posts on Instagram that bashed the season or commented negatively on it. Things didn’t end there, as he even made some negative comments on the story when, in one of the episodes, a scene made a callback to the first season of the show.
And then, when he was being questioned on all this, Pizzolatto came up with a noncommittal response, saying he didn’t do any of it to bash the show. He even made a separate post on Instagram, asking fans not to come after him or his family because of all this. But given this is the age of the internet, every negative post he had previously liked or shared about Night Country did not just disappear. And now he is bearing the brunt of his doings.
Nic Pizzolatto Might Get Blacklisted by Hollywood
After his not-so-favorable doings, Nic Pizzolatto might face some heat from the industry on top of being an enemy of the fans. After True Detective: Night Country gained better critical rating than the first season of the show, the series creator made a mess of himself by making negative comments. The fans took it to another level, given that the recent season was created as well as led by female artists.
Kali Reis, after learning of Pizzolatto’s views on Night Country posted on X (formerly Twitter)
“That’s a damn shame…but hey, I guess ‘if you don’t have anything good to share, shit on others’ is the new wave lol.”
In a recent episode on The Hot Mic by John Rocha and Jeff Sneider, the industry insiders spoke on how his comments might come back to bite him in the a**. Pizzolatto, who is currently working with Amazon on The Magnificent Seven reboot, might get the axe after his problematic comments. As Sneider said on the podcast,
“After all this, it’s just so easy for them [Amazon] to wipe their hands off him [Pizzolatto] and be like, you know what? Even if they still wanna do Magnificent Seven, unless its like fucking brilliant, let’s just fucking find somebody else. Go find someone comparable to Issa Lopez and do something cool and have a female perspective on that.”
It would not be too far-fetched if Amazon actually ends up replacing Pizzolatto with someone with fewer problems, after the recent happenings.
True Detective: Night Country is available for streaming on HBO.
